I need one of those 'fail' lists that Furdabip has! Take them, Motorhead and Priest and that's about all the metal you truly need. Apart from Opeth, Arch Enemy and bands of that sort of course.

I'd probably suggest Opeth too, though seeing both them and Arch Enemy last Friday (about a metre away from Angela Gossow dead centre, it was quite an experience) it was a pretty damn tough call as to who put on the best performance. DevilDriver were horrifically bad mind.

I saw Opeth at the Culture Room. I think it was '06 or '07. They were beastly.
They closed with Blackwater Park...the song. Culture Room is a venue where mostly metal bands play around here.
I saw Krisiun and Unleashed there, as well as Necrophagist (okay, that was somewhere else), Converge, Mastadon, and The Sword.

In completely unrelated news, I'm seeing Radiohead, tomorrow. Yay.

Also, has anyone mentioned Battles?
I just heard Mirrored the other day and it forcefully drove a nail of awesomeness into my brain.

I saw them last in 2005 I think, I missed them the last time round but after seeing them for a second time I've decided I can't really afford to make that mistake again. First time I saw them they opened with Deliverance, which considering that's my favourite song of theirs no contest wasn't too bad. They ended with Blackwater Park too. Setlist this time round was:

Demon of the Fall
Master's Apprentices
The Baying of the Hounds
In My Time of Need
Wreath(!!!)
Heir Apparent
The Drapery Falls

I'm not half a big a fan of metal as I used to be, but there are certain bands that make me wet my pants every now and then, and Opeth are definitely one of them.

Radiohead should be good! I was going to see them in Manchester but proud Brit I am I'm seeing The Boss instead. Umm and err all you want but he is tippy top as far as I'm concerned!

And I still need to get the Battles album, I love what I've heard. I reckon they sound what Yes would have sounded like if they were actually androids from the 23rd century.

Lyrical Edit: Setting off in a few minutes to rock out to Simon Armitage doing his thing. Which is poetry reading, though if his band make an appearance I'm sure it would be a pleasant surprise.

Like I said before, I saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo 06, they played for three hours. And wow, I don't think this concert is going to top that but I knew I had to see them again, they were just incredible. Anyway, you mentioned poetry reading. For a second I thought Simon Armitage was gonna sound like this radio show we have around here (on some college radio). This good friend of mine does it. It's spoken word with a comical twist (sometimes) and music by some local musicians. It's called (beware, myspace link)Pure Imagination, I really enjoy it. You should check it out.
("Dress for Success" is a good start)

First time I heard it on the radio...Haha...Good time.

I have that recording. Didn't realise it was 3 hours long- you sure? Seems more like a two hour affair. Either way bloody amazing tracklist and performance.

Fansites everywhere said it was their longest show in their career I think. If it wasn't 3 hours, (it certainly felt like it) it must've been real close to 3.

Well the lighting during Liars was terrible so I couldn't get a good shot of them...But.
I got some great shots of Radiohead! Smile Thought I'd share with you all? Maybe?

Their sets have been amazing since Kid A but this new set of theirs just defies explanation.
It was beautiful.

The music was spectacular.
Highlights (for me anyways) included: Optimistic **I was not expecting that**, The Gloaming **incredibly different from the record**, and wow National Anthem was amazing! Jonny caught some awesome talk show on his transistor radio,
it was really appropriate for the song. And the noise he made during Exit Music was even more haunting than the record's version! Somehow...

Ok ok, my pretentious Radiohead rant is offically over.
Anyone like the photos??

That looks spectacular. Yeah they've been playing Optimistic a lot since their BBC session a month or two back- they had to play one song they didn't play much, enjoyed it so much and did it again as an encore. Since then they've played it almost every set.

Oh, and before I forget...
I think you may agree there will probably never be a better Radiohead setlist than this:
Bonnaroo 2006
1. there there
2. 2+2=5
3. 15 step
4. arpeggi
5. exit music
6. kid a
7. dollars & cents
8. videotape
9. no surprises
10. paranoid arndroid
11. the gloaming
12. national anthem
13. climbing up the walls
14. Nude
15. street spirit
16. the bends
17. myxomytosis
18. how to disappear completely

encore 1
1. you and whose army
2. pyramid song
3. spinning plates
4. fake plastic trees
5. body snatchers
6. lucky
7. idioteque
8. karma police

encore 2
1. house of cards
2. everything in it’s right place

Holy crap! I had forgotten how incredible that first Radiohead show of mine was. It could explain why I was delirious for a few days afterward. Not to mention the fact that I was really really close, since I had camped out at the stage to get a good spot. Pleasure-center-overload

They were on Jools a few weeks ago right? I remember thinking they were one of the only reasons to tune in that week, but quickly dismissed that notion when I heard them and thought they were a bit pants. Of the new bands it's cool to like I think that MGMT aren't too bad from what I've heard, though I know there's oddles of stuff I'm missing out on. Seem to be playing Bob Dylan and very little else apart from choice albums in the recent past mind.

Also discovered Morrissey has chosen them for his day on Wireless. With a lineup like this:
MORRISSEY
BECK
THE WOMBATS
THE NATIONAL
GUILLEMOTS
SIOUXSIE SIOUX
DIRTY PRETTY THINGS
NEW YORK DOLLS
LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION
GET CAPE WEAR CAPE FLY
BLACK KIDS

I am thinking more and more than £45 ain't that much. I think travel + overnight accommodation etc will kill it for me though. Though having said that missing The Wombats and the Guillemots has got to be a good thing. Also Hold Steady on the Sunday but they seem lost amidst a lineup of stellar acts such as Delays, Counting Crows(?), Bowling For Soup(??), Goo Goo Dolls(!!??), I feel sorry for them. Looking forward to the new album though. And the new Moz single of course. And the new My Brightest Diamond which I downloaded then felt guilty about so deleted(????). Also the new Martha Wainwright album 'I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too' is up on NME so gonna give that a spin when I get the chance.

Edit of the utmost importance/essay evading: I reember you talking about that music blog and I think you may have showed it me in its earliest stages though I never kept up with it. They're always fun but I only tend to frequent one of them, which seems almost tailor made to my taste in music.

Oh yes what does everyone think of this little ditty:

I think considering her vocal talents the concept for the album was a masterstroke. Also she is pretty so her album must be good[/irony...or is it?]

Holloway introduced me to MGMT, now I hear them everywhere. Numerous TV adverts, such Skysports, are using their stuff, and 21 had Time to Pretend as its title theme.

Also played on the credits of the last episode of Skins if I remember rightly! It seems that every trendy band you come across nowadays is a trendy electropop band from New York, but I suppose some of the trendy bands from New York of the past have been rather good (cf. The Velvet Underground, Patti Smith Group, Ramones) and some of the ones from across the road in Boston have been pretty good too (cf. Pixies, The Modern Lovers, Aerosmith) so I'm letting this one pass.

I've rattled it down to two reasons:

a) For instant indie cred: "I'm going to do an album of Goo Goo Dolls covers" just wouldn't have had the same appeal;
b) If any close-minded individuals accuse of her being not able to sing in the slightest she can merely say "Well have you heard the vocals on the original???"

I've heard comparisons to Nico, which I think is a very nice thing to say. I believe it was meant as a negative comment though, but they're just being silly as I love Nico:

The Velvet Underground & Nico - Femme Fatale
The Velvet Underground & Nico - I'll Be Your Mirror
Nico - These Days
Nico - I'll Keep It With Mine (written by Dylan this one)

Cynic were from Florida...along with Death of course. Death metal is still quite alive here but it's hard to find, considering you have to sift through all the really whiny metalcore bands with identical hair.

She is a huge Waits fan, and has been since she was in 8th grade she says. She has more than enough so-called "indie cred" from movies like Ghost World and Lost in Translation. Believe it or not, she isn't in it to make millions of dollars, or to "compete" with the originals (for someone so interested in music, Myo, I'm pretty offended that you would think a cover's purpose is to best the original).

Yes I believe I've read about this. Personally I think it's an incredibly quirky idea that from what I've heard so far works very well. If you're going to do the whole actress turns singer on heavily produced pop album, then you might as well go all out. And getting David Bowie to sing with you is never a bad move too. Unless of course you're Morrissey and decide to leave his tour because he asked you to sing with him(???).

Plus it's finally got me thinking endlessly about which Tom Waits album to start with and just get one.

I didn't mean that- I meant that she'll comparatively look worse given she's 'competing' with Tom Waits. Can't say I've heard her album yet though.

Currently into 80's Music Smile I was telling my guitar teacher about this sudden music taste and he said " Yeah then you'll get into 70's , 60's --- about until you hit Frank Sinatra, then you'll know that's enough....." Which made me laugh..

Is that really how it works?!

Here's some 80's i've been into lately

I can't stop listening to Journey! I heart the randy jackson era.

Cindy Lauper - Such a wide vocal range, definitely an important artist.

David Bowie - Took a different route with his music , which seemed to inspire many of today's artists. Very unique, I loved him in "Labyrinth"

The Smiths - One of my all time favorite 80's rock bands. ( And they're english ... )

Micheal Jackson - amazing stage presence and I love his voice.

(Off topic of 80's music, but above I saw Savy and csc talking about Joanna Newsom. I heard her in a horror movie preview the other day. was surprising when I heard her. But then again, her music added a creepy feel to the preview ; and worked out perfectly.)

I was going to say that the 80s Bowie (minus Scary Monsters) was probably his lowpoint, but then I remembered his 90s output! I don't own any of the dancy albums but I don't really mind the songs at all on them. The Labyrinth soundtrack stuff I am a very big fan of however! My favourite Bowie album is a toss between Ziggy, Aladdin Sane and Low I think though. My fave song "Heroes" of course.

As for The Smiths, I've seen the mainman 6 times live in concert so yes I think they're quite good too.

I can imagine what you mean about Joanna Newsom's sound. It's almost kind of fairy tale-esque but put in that context it could be rather unnerving.

Heh, understatement.

I suggest you look into some New Wave stuff from the 80s- Blondie, Ultravox, Human League, Gary Numan etc. Or some of the other "rockier" stuff like Joy Division/ New Order, Bauhaus etc.

Not to forget The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and all that sort of stuff. New Order got less rockier as they went on I think, during the 80s at least. First disc of Substance is one of the best things released in the 80s.

The problem with Billy Idol is that apart from White Wedding and Rebel Yell, he didn't really do any other songs which were...umm....good. He looks like he puts on a cracking show live mind, even if he does seem to mimic Iggy Pop a bit too much.

I prefer Rebel Yell myself! The GTA soundtracks for the past few games haven't been too shabby, I think!

Nothing quite so exciting as in the last post, but I went out to get the new Cure single released today (the 13th) from their forthcoming 13th album, which is naturally the first of 4 singles (but as a consolation each one will be released on the 13th of the month until the album comes out on September 13th). The number 13 is definitely lucky for Cure fans then (or Universal at least, good old clueless suck up fans who will buy anything a band puts out).

So yeah I bought that, then spotted the new Nick Cave single which came out yesterday so I picked that up too. There's a really creepy extended version of Night of the Lotus Eaters on it as a music video, which is on youtube so well worth having a gander at that.

Also I am enjoying this record at the moment:

I swore the guy at HMV gave me a funny look when I bought this. Not enjoying it as much as her previous album so far but it's still very good. And her previous album is one of the things I tend to play most out of any records I have, so I suppose it would take some beating.

http://www.myspace.com/marthawainwright The top two tracks on there I am liking muchly.

Nick Cave was really good at balancing his old and new material where a lot of bands fail, especially with a discography as extensive as his (only other band I've seen who have balanced a huge discography so well was The Jesus & Mary Chain)

I was pissed off that he didn't play a Manchester date! I decided against travelling elsewhere as I'd have had to have stopped over and for a skint student that's never a good thing. The setlists on the DVD gigs are decent though, so I wouldn't have expected any less!

Whilst typing this I realised I've missed the beginning of Jools with them playing on that! What a plonker! I'll put it on the iPlayer once it's finished.

CSC: I tried to get into Rufus/Martha/Loudon a kind of long time ago but couldn't really do it. I listened to the songs on that myspace from Martha's new album and they aren't really impressing me. :Old: A little too similar to Neko Case + Mary Lou Lord I think. I remember "Bloody Mother F*cking *ssh*le" being the only song I really enjoyed but I can hardly remember any others, or if I had downloaded her album or just some various songs. I still really want to spend more time on Loudon though. Album suggestions mayb?

I must admit the only Loudon Wainwright tracks I've heard are covers: Johnny Cash's rendition of The Man Who Couldn't Cry (last track on 'American Recordings', now that is a great album) and Rufus' version of 'One Man Guy' are the ones which come to mind. I should really get round to getting an album or two at some stage.

As an aside, the 'Bloody Mother F**king A**hole' of the title is Loudon, so I doubt Martha would be willing to give you tips as to which albums to go either!

The second album isn't as good as the first in my opinion (I'm really enjoying it though I must admit), but I listen to the first album a lot. I love the ones on the myspace, though there isn't too much else on youtube. Found these:

Martha Wainwright - When The Day Is Short
Martha Wainwright - BMFA / Far Away (Jools Holland)

I don't think she's the most innovative songwriter ever, but I really really enjoy her stuff and think she has a wonderful voice.

As for Rufus, I think if you can watch the following with a straight face/camp giggle:
Rufus Wainwright - Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart
Rufus Wainwright - Get Happy

You're okay otherwise you're most likely not a fan. Or heterosexual. Or possibly both.

EDIT: He did Get Happy as an encore when I saw him last year. Was I pleased? Why yes I was.

Lately I'm into David Bowie as well as a new J-pop band (new for me, atleast) called Perfume. Some of their songs suck, but the majority of them are good.
For Bowie, the best song for me is "Life on Mars".
For Perfume, I'd say I'm torn between "Linear Motor Girl" and "Electro World".

I also have an obsession with the song "I believe in a thing called love" by The Darkness. Such a weird music video. The lead singer is naked in every video they make.

No lies, just love.

Avenged Fxxxing Sevenfold, and all other Metal, excluding Slayer(they can suck my ass)

I need one of those 'fail' lists that Furdabip has! Take them, Motorhead and Priest and that's about all the metal you truly need. Apart from Opeth, Arch Enemy and bands of that sort of course.

Slayer sucks, they can barely play their instruments and their vocals sound worse than Phil Anselmo live[which, by the way, is pretty suck].

Motorhead is the shit, never really listened to Judas Priest(I'm assuming thats what you're implying). Opeth is another one I've never really listened to, but Arch Enemy is okay.

Megadeth is the shit, Metallica has sucked since the 'Black Album,' Anthrax is pretty good, Iron Maiden is pretty awesome(from what I hear from some of my friends).

But I have one question, why is Avenged Sevenfold fail?
