Final Fantasy Legacies

Hey. I'm new here. I just recently download RPG Maker2k and 2k3 and have been constantly playing Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, and X and got the idea to make my own Final Fantasy.

I'm looking for people to help me design the menus, and put in Limit Breaks and an AP system. I saw the tutorials for them, but I still don't quite understand how it works. Anyways, heres the plot:

"Long ago, there was a power called "magi". It could accomplish many incredible feats. It could cure the sick, protect the weak and even raise the dead. But it could also cause horrible destruction. Many feared this power, but a few took advantage of its darker side. One such man was a sorceror named Raiza. His Black Magi was so powerful, he nearly brought forth a great apocalypse called The Calamity.

Fearing the destruction of Eartha, the Seven Gods: Shiva, Diablos, Ifrit, Quezacotl, Titan, Bahamut and Alexander sealed away the Magi. And so it has been for over 100 years.

On a small, isolated island, a boy named Soka lives peacefully... until a six-winged creature calling himself The Bringer decimates his island. Soka awakens on an unfamilar snowy wasteland. His adventure begins..."

Thats the low down. Any feedback is welcomed. And anyone who would be willing to help me please post on this thread. Thanks.

EDIT: I have just learned that there is a game (whether fan-made or official I don't know) of a similar name. So in order to avoid arguments blah blah blah, the name of this project has be changed to: Final Fantasy: Calamity. Here be the logo...

You're part a LONG line up of FFFanboys who want to create an FFFangame. So what makes your story like a Final Fantasy? Just that it contains the names of items and summons from the Final Fantasy universe? If that's it, and the story has NOTHING to do with ANY OTHER FF, then how is it a Final Fantasy? It's just a stupid excuse to not have to think of original stuff, or take risks with your own story. Smile

Isn't that pretty much how the Final Fantasy series works? Not counting the sequels and spinoffs, but those are pretty much best forgotten...

As Furdabip says, it's a fairly common idea to make a Final Fantasy game and a lot of people resultingly turn their nose up at it. Personally provided it's an entertaining game it doesn't bother me though. What I would suggest however, if you've only just started playing around with RM2K/3 is to make something fairly basic whilst getting used to the maker and get into the frame of mind to start thinking about custom systems. Like anything, you're always going to make better games/game mechanics if you understand the logic behind them, instead of copying and pasting scripts from the internet. Plus if you've done the maths I should think it a lot more rewarding!

I want to know why every new persons' game is always involves "a [great evil] being sealed away for [X] years by some [great warriors/gods] and it's just about ready to break out."

It does make me chuckle that this is every new guy's game plot. Is there some sort of game that everyone has played and loved, or some tv show, cartoon or film? Is it perhaps a well know brother grimm tale, or a common folklore story? Or is there a book which is a complete guide to writing "Sealed Away for 1000 Years by the Crystals Stories" tutorial on the Internet somewhere? It just seems like everyone has this same plot. They must get it from somewhere?

As for your game concept, there's no need to call it Final Fantasy since it's got no relation to those games or Square. You might as well call it Super Mario Legacies. I recommend that before you try and create an epic, you mess about with the program and learn it yourself. Just make a ridiculous game but try to include as many interesting systems you can, learning how to do them in the process. As for when you get onto a serious game, I suggest you ditch the Final Fantasy copyright and come up with a more original plot. Any different plot you come up with will be more original than the "Zzzzz plot" of the sealed away thing.

Well, it was the plot to Final Fantasy 5 if that helps...

My first project (aged 11?) had that storyline. And I'd never played FF5 back then. So I don't know where it comes from, really, I'd never read a story like that nor did I often play RPGs. Weird. I think it's just a hivemind of people discovering RM.

Exactly. I think my first RM project had a plot something similar to that one, yet I hadn't played FF5 then either. I wonder where it comes from...? Maybe we humans are just frightfully unimaginative as kids.

I was determined not to make a story like that when I started on RM. Don't know why that is...first project was in which a normal boy was whisked away during his baptism (in a late baptism church) by someone that turned out to be the bad guy, who took him to a world full of magic because this child was special and his baptism, unlike that of others, gave him the power of magic. Interesting even more because I don't go to church, nor was I ever baptised myself, nor have I ever seen anyone else be, nor do I even know much about it. But I guess there was an element of the "all of the last several thousand years has been waiting for this to happen" sort of thing, although it wasn't the release of the bad guy. I fail after all...

I woulda commented on his storyline, but then it's a DOUBLE blow, peoples. I only wanted to HALF-break his spirit, so he might still stick around. Smile

But of course my first ever game idea included crystals and ancient evils. I think it's a popular culture related thing, and not an RPG-related thing. Generally all the old RPGs have some sort of ancient evil that rose up X years ago, and was defeated, but is now trying to escape. Amusingly, one of the better non-FF RPGs has exactly that; Lufia. I remember a couple of S/NES games I played while looking for a good ROM having the same kind of plot, also.

So... it's probably learning how to make a plot through repetition of bad plots, rather than some magical game that taught everyone how to do it wrong.

Tales of Phantasia.
It's more like, in that time it wasn't considered a bad plot. Still, I think that a good storyline doesn't need to depend that much on the originality of the plot. A good storyteller can fascinate others without something extremely out of the ordinary.

XD. Holy crap...I didn't think I'd get blasted in the balls for my idea. But I suppose the story is quite cliche...maybe I'll work on it. Boy aren't you gaiz strict XD. The story may be linear but it has some twists and stuff. Well...if anyone wants to put in any more input please do. I'm working on it. If anyone has any tips or something let me know.

Half-breaking my spirit, eh? It will take more than a few words on a computer screen to break me.

My tip would be to not call it a Final Fantasy game whatsoever. Come up with an original name for it. And for goddess' sake, don't subtitle the title...only amateurs do that, or companies who've lost all imagination.

Oh, and I'd put your 8% thing in my sig but I'm not a teenager so I guess that doesn't help. Sticking Out Tongue
