Demos to what? Forum topics or downloads entries? Attachments SHOULD be preserved. Downloads will have to be re-imported.

None of that bothers me--the polls and display names and whatnot.

Here I point out that converting the post data is a two-step process, from IPB to phpBB, then on to Drupal. There do not exist any tools to convert directly, but the phpBB -> Drupal conversion tools are superb. As such, I have a temporary phpBB site set up:

http://129.186.42.164/phpBB2/

That's basically how the stuff is displaying right now. Now, I'm not saying to go there and post in it, but you can look at stuff and see if anything is horribly wrong. I'm fiddling with the converter tool, which is really badly written, to get everything converted correctly. The biggest hurdle is the fact that IPB stores posts in the database as pure HTML, and converts it back into BBcode when editing posts. phpBB apparently stores extra information in the BB tags, but doesn't store it as fully rendered. I think I've got it, though, without resorting to including the core IPB scripts into the convertor.

This probably doesn't matter that much but...
It doesn't show on, the left, which thread the newest post is in, just who wrote it!!! Gasp
I pretty much rely on that!!! Sticking Out Tongue

EDIT: double error
Everytime I try to open a post, it says:

"Information

No posts exist for this topic"

It says that for every thread, even when it says there are posts in there on the forum front page!!

DOUBLE EDIT: :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

For your problem with the posts not showing up, I was probably in the middle of reimporting the post text. I was fiddling with the BBcode handler.

As for search spiders, they are a good thing because they get us indexed by Google and bring new people here.

So I suppose it was the google.com search spider that brought me here...
Did anyone come here through Ask_Jeeves?

I didn't think so

Will the bbcode work in the new drupal site?
I hope it does...

I got a link from another site. Don't recall the site's name. I hit up the Palace for resources, went "well, that's not a lot. o__o" and looked at the forums. And then felt oddly compelled to stay and bug the crap out of everyone. TO DEATH. -dark laugh-

We have two options regarding BBcode. It is possible to continue using it on Drupal as-is, or we could use filtered HTML instead. It would have mostly the same functionality using <b> and <i> instead of [ b ] and [ i ] but some things would be different, like [ center ]. If we used a filtered HTML approach, it would be possible (and preferable) to use a WYSIWYG editor like FCKEditor, or a WYSIWYM editor. I would be more partial to the one ending in M. The difference is "What you see is what you get/mean".

I'd like some opinions on the subject.

I have never used the HTML codes...everywhere I've been has used BBcode. Suppose it's good to learn something new, though! :lol3:

Yes, I think you could use either BBcode or an HTML-enabled WYSIWYM editor. The latter would of course be prettier, and you wouldn't actually see the markup anyway (besides from choosing whether each line is a paragraph or header, etc.)

Update:

The input box is proving very difficult. Any attempt at customization fails, mainly because it's so damn complicated. Also, the graphical editors don't work with the smiley buttons. Not sure how to fix that.

Also there's some trouble importing the parts of the topics that isn't the topic start. Getting the first post took so long that it's difficult for me to troubleshoot the problem. However, it seems that at some point in the conversion (probably ipb > phpbb) I also lost avatars. Is it too much trouble to re-upload avatars? I would like to get them it, but it may not be easy. If it's ipb > phpbb, it's a lot easier for me to figure that out because it doesn't take as long.

I wouldn't mind re-uploading my avatar...it'd give me an excuse to swap to a new one, actually.

It wouldn't really matter if topic subtitles went away either because the majority of topic subtitles are comments relating to the title.

well subtitles are mainly used if you don't 100% explain what you want to acomplish
on the title.

I guess you can take the subs away if we were a bit more direct with the title. (someting I can bear on so yeah.)

It's a fun thing to mess with, but we don't need it...I'd rather have a site we didn't have to worry about than the subs. :lol3: If you eventually find a way to get them back, awesome. If not, well, I say it was nice playing with them, but they can go the way of the dodo.

I always struggle to come up with something to put in the subtitle field, so if it goes away that would be fine with me. The only thing I found it useful for was for putting in "SOLVED" when an issue has been worked out in the Game Making Support section. Of course, "SOLVED" can always be added to the end of the main title, so again I have no problem with the subtitles going away.

Alright, after having said so many times what I can't do, here's something pretty awesome that I can!

Each user can create a list of bookmarks on the side of the page. This starts out with one entry, "About Bookmarks" which explains a the feature a little bit (possibly a link to a larger FAQ's page). You can use the "Bookmark this page" link to add new bookmarks, and the "Customize" button to rearrange them. You get to use the same powerful tools available to administrators in building your bookmarks menu, including multi-level menus and setting the lower levels to be always expanded, or only when one of those pages is being viewed. There's also a capability for loading preset bookmarks and sharing your list with the world. How would you like to have a "My Favorite Links" in your profile? Now you can!

Oh that would be friggin awesome! I could add bookmarks for topics in the Support section, so when new members ask for help with something that was solved months earlier, I could find those old topics very easily. I like this feature, Meu! Laugh

I don't know how, but the rest of the post migration seems to have happened on its own...somehow. I had stopped the process after it had taken two days already with no progress and assumed it was hung, but apparently it wasn't. My best guess is that it scheduled a cron job for the rest of it and has been chugging away every hour since Thursday and just got it finished today.

Anyway, ignoring all that technical speak, I can now see where we are with the import. There were some small problems, which I was expecting, such as quotes getting the "from" line a bit messed up, and some larger problems like signatures getting cut off. Karltheking's old signature gets cut off mid-sentence while talking about the bunny.

The biggest problem I have right now is that the smileys box is not working with WYMeditor. It's a shame, really, but I'll try to figure it out. And after I've gotten so far in theming the thing, too...

Hopefully you can get the from lines, signatures and smilie box working with Drupal. It would be a shame to see them go Frown
Best o' luck! Laugh

It's still around, and I got a little IRC widget for the new Drupal page. It's much nicer than the Java-based widget we have now (imho), but dedicated clients are still preferred. However, I think we should probably negotiate with our IRC host about a channel, if we're going to really have one. The channel we had has been unregistered, and unless someone plans on volunteering to be IRC admin it should probably stay that way for now.

Um any reliable IRC host should let you register channels for free, all you need to do is register with nickserv and then make a channel and /cs register. If you need an irc admin to register a channel then you should find a new network Smile

Also hi, wow, long time since I've been here, sorry about that lol.

If you want one just make one, it's not something that takes time to set up.

I'm an IRCop on a small network if you're after one but tbh just go to any network and type /join #channelname and you've got one.
