First Impressions Of Earth was good because it changed the formula, I thought Room On Fire (great as it was) was waaay too similar to Is This It, to a degree where it just seemed almost like a b-sides album. So changing their style a little helped, although sadly for all the style shifts, First Impressions just didn't have many tunes to back it up...
What kind of music do you like? (The music thread)
I love 80s rock and heavy metal. I'm also partial to J-Rock and J-pop. My favorite bands include: Poison, Motley Crue, Cinderella, and Ratt.
I like rock. The real rock like ACDC or Scorpions. I also like Metal. Not the scary stuff with all the creepy growls, but stuff like Metallica and Judiest Preist.
One of my current favorite bands is Seven Mary Three. Water's Edge, Lucky, Cumberson, and Times Like These are very good songs.
I have a question for you all: Do you like rock music like Do you like rock music?
PS: Seeing Simian Mobile Disco Saturday \o/
Do You Like Rock Music? is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Anyone who disses it has no soul, or some sort of fault with their ears, or possibly a cruel amalgamation of the two. On the subject of British Sea Power I read this on the NME site - http://www.nme.com/news/british-sea-power/33862 - painful!
You're from Sheffield right, isn't Simian on Friday? I was gonna be seeing them there but the folks I was gonna go with couldn't get the day off work for it. You're in for a treat though, they were absolutely INCREDIBLE supporting Klaxons, most fun I'd had at a gig in ages.
Ay, good old Sheffield. And I have work the next morning- thankfully, I've managed to get in late for 10am, so not too shabby.
And I love how the NME still dislikes British Sea Power, or seems to like to underhype them (not necessarily a bad thing given how much of a cunt Alex Turner became) whilst LIKING SCOUTING FOR GIRLS.
Gah
Alex Turner got with Alexa Chung though, I know if I was that lucky I'd become a cunt as well.
British Sea Power are awesome live as well; the NME never gave them enough attention because they're a bit "quirky" I think, singing about rocks and whatnot. Scouting For Girls are worse than the plague though, not in a POP MUSIC R GAY way but just because his voice is sickening.
But yes, Sheffield is quite the city. I go to most of my gigs either there or Leeds because no one noteworthy ever comes to Hull. I mean there are some alright acts like Glasvegas, Richard Hawley or Lightspeed Champion coming up but they're nothing special, I'd prefer not to spend my money on 'alright' gigs and just go for ones I really like. Although The Fall at the Welly Club would be pretty neat because it's just a tiny venue.
‘Lights Out For Darker Skies’ sounds like it should be nestling between The Kooks and The Pigeon Detectives on a chart show somewhere...
When I read that I almost choked on my Coco Pops in disgust! The most wonderful song I've heard in months, with perhaps the exception of 'Waving Flags,' which seems to get better every time I listen to it. Or indeed 'Open The Door.'
I've been waiting for an opportunity to express my love for this album. I was a little late picking it up because of a few technical difficulities (I lost my card), but I prefer it to pretty much anything I heard from 2007. Shame I couldn't get myself to a gig (I realise up in Durham that being a native Mancunian concertgoer I'm spoilt), but definitely need to get myself to one at one stage in my life.
The British Sea Power newsletter described Scouting For Girls' track 'She's So Lovely' as "idiot mental cavity-insulation." I've never heard the track but I thought that was quite funny.
Christina Aguilera, she is dead dead good
ioo!
Christina Aguilera, she is dead dead good
Who the heck is she?
Christina Aguilera, she is dead dead good
ioo!
I was being ironic! *hides his Christina Aguilera records*
HMV are currently doing a "2 for £10" offer on the best of British albums, but also a seperate "2 for £10" offer on the best of the past year. So as well as finally getting copies of Kid A and OK Computer on a non-Vinyl format, I picked up "The National - Boxer", "Patrick Wolf - Magic Position", "Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold" and finally a copy of The Pipettes given I've been living off of borrowed copies of that for the past year.
On the subjcet of Patrick Wolf, my good friend in all her wisdom asked "Is Patrick Wolf gay?"... Lots of people saying things along the lines of "biggest flaming queen ever" were directed at her.
Patrick Wolf annoys me a bit, not so much his music (which I love, especially the first two albums) but his general pompous and pretentious nature. He's the kind of guy I'd like to punch if I knew someone like him.
Plus he was crap at Leeds Festival, which annoyed me to a degree where I walked off halfway, then forgot to go back for Albert Hammond which annoyed me some more.
The Pipettes album was actually really good, I can't say I know much by Bats For Lashes and Pitchfork's obsession with the National put me off of listening to it, somewhat...
I spend far too much time in this thread
Yes, that you do. But it's good to have a thread gnome.
Anyone like their shoes Blood Red at all?
Edit: Also http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ER2yuiP2v2g - best video ever? Best bit has to be around 2:55 when he lamps Chris Cain with a bottle.
Never really bothered with Patrick Wolf, I get the impression that he's a bit overhyped. Completely unfounded by actually hearing the music, but gut feeling is sometimes pretty good to go off.
I love the Pipettes' album, though I haven't put it on for a while. I haven't heard the extra tracks on the US version, so need to chase those up at some point. They were bloody good fun live, plus the only band I've seen who gave you a free lollypop when you bought some merchandise (it was a Pipettes branded lollypop too!). Some of the B Sides/older stuff is worth hunting down, stuff like Simon Says and I Like A Boy In Uniform .
I wouldn't say Pitchfork were obsessed with The National...well maybe. I do love Boxer; it gets better with age I think. I want the album before that one if only for Abel.
Not heard Blood Red Shoes, quite liked that We Are Scientists video/song it was pleasant.
I'm liking this Vampire Weekend outfit. They veer dangerously close to reggae but somehow manage to get away with it. I imagine I'll be sick of them in 6 weeks but I like them now anyway.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_XC2mqcMMGQ Rips off OKGo kind of but it's still a nice video.
At the moment I seem to be alternating between Patti Smith and The Magnetic Fields, which is slightly odd but slightly good.
The all kinds of metal, death metal, heavy metal, power metal and so go on..
My 3 favorite bands are In Flames, Sonic syndicate and Arch enemy (all from sweden)
For you guys and girls that dont really know what metal is, this is a taste of my irl pals band, they play death metal http://www.myspace.com/ancientmisttheband
Yes, Blood Red Shoes are fantastic, I've been a fan for quite some time now actually. Admittedly I only listened to them after they added me on myspace based on their profile picture, because Laura-Mary is just so...lovely. Such a big sound for just two people, it's brilliant. Never seen them, though I have missed them twice due to circumstances out of my league when they were in the area and it was rather annoying.
Vampire Weekend I love as well, if I'm in the mood. If not I hate them. They were more of a summer outfit for me but a track like Mansard Roof will usually tickle my fancy at whatever time. There are a lot of good US indie-pop imports right now that don't sound a world apart from one another, rather hyped but thankfully rather good. MGMT, Yeasayer, Black Kids and Vampire Weekend are the main 'culprits'.
I was contemplating getting tickets for WAS based on their performance of the singular song I caught at Leeds, but I don't know if it's worth it...can anyone say if they're any good live?
Oh and CSC, are you going to any of the recently announced Bad Seeds shows perchance?
I was looking forward to going to see them lots and lots, but I kind of took for granted that they'd be doing a Manchester show. Whoops. Looked at going to see them the next closest place to me (Glasgow) but what with stopping over and train tickets and such it'll work out too expensive I think =/. I'm hoping they'll announce some more dates, I really wanted to see them!!
WaS are far better live than on record. The guitarist and bassist do the usual gig chatter but, unlike most, they are actually funny. I think I read that the bassist was a comedian for a short time.
Seen the new BSP video? I am disturbed!
And whilst we're at it might as well have the new Richard Hawley video [Valentine]:
And the one before that if you want:
The One Before That, If You Want [Serious]
Both directed by Shane Meadows (director of This Is England).
Hoooly shit.
Justice again tonight ^__________^
http://www.last.fm/music/?m=artists&q=
Anyone bemused that the Top Ten tracks of this week is the ten tracks of IRs.
Still quite annoyed that my mate is a complete fool and 3 of us traipsed up Sheffield to see Justice last Saturday and it's this coming Saturday.
I was meant to be traipsing up to Sheffield this Saturday to do the very same.
But as these things go, I am completely out of pocket, at least if I want to be able to get to the Plug on the 26th.
And I must say I'm honoured about this stickied business...
That video by BSP is going to give me nightmares. That was weird as hell.
@Justice: Late of the pier?
Yes.
Also to add a bit of weight to this post beyond one word, BSP appear to be playing every festival imaginable. SXSW, Glasto, Reading/Leeds, T In The Park and Bestival...good times ahead, no doubt.
I bought an Of Montreal record on a whim. "Satanic Panic in the Attic". My friend kept wanting me to get it. That's a band that all you guys like right?
My favorite band is Casey Baker and The Buffalo Sinners. He plays music similar to City and Colour if anyone knows of that band. City and Colour's main man Dallas Green has a song called Casey's song and it was written by Casey Baker who couldn't make it to the recording studio. But yeah, it's folky acoustic music.
I dont know if I can advertise, but here's his myspace.
http://www.myspace.com/caseybakermusic
Right now I'm into a lot of electro/trance.
Use to be into more acoustic stuff but that gets so boring after awhile.
But I go in circles with music genres
Had to bail. As much as I like Justice, I had to buy Gary Numan tickets. The human god is in Sheffield
Oh and Long Blondes. Shes the human godess then.
Haha funny you should say that, I got a text from my brother this very morn asking if I wanted to go see Gary Numan at the Corp, but I'm in Manchester that day...
Well I haven't posted here in a while...
For now, I treat you to this Liars video that I only saw for the first time today which is actually genuinely scary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-r8HWri41s
It's like watching Lost Highway mixed with the Karma Police video to the soundtrack of, well, Liars...
Thought this might be of interest:
I went on that and thought "Oh must be an Open Season track". How the heck have I managed to avoid this track on every play through? Oh well, suppose I'll give it a spin.
It's my favourite song on the album =/
Well apart from 'Lights Out For Darker Skies', of course.
It's my least favourite song on the album...I just find it grinds a wee bit. Except for Waving Flags though I can't really listen to that album unless I hear the whole thing through. Atom was amazing til I listened to Everyone Is Happy Nowadays by the Buzzcocks and laughed at the rip-offery, though it was probably unintentional.
Also,
Late of the pier
Tomorrow!
I'm no Muse obsessive, but even I came a little watching this:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tDTSbF5Bnaw
And loled at the guitar robot:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=edr_id_Klz4
I really need to stop wasting my money on drinking and buy a fucking Kaoss pad. Hooking up one of those to a guitar is my ambition for 2008.
I listen to various kind of music. Though I mostly listen to metal bands, especially Finnish ones.
i love rock (foreign though) german rock, italian rock, techno, tokio hotel and negramaro are my favorite bands... they are most popular in europe (no one on the western hemisphere knows who they are lol) but this is true im a dieahard fan of techno mostly trance, house but i actually like techno then any genre i like

Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
Thoughts?
If the music is as good as the packaging then it will be the best album ever (I got the deluxe version). Gonna give it a listen once I've made 'significant progress' with my essay, hopefully 'significant progress' meaning 'finished'.
EDIT: I got the single last week, the B Side 'Accidents Will Happen' is great!
I'm currently listening to Yoko Kanno, the artist who sang for the Ghost in the Shell soudtrack. In fact, that's what I'm listening to, GITS soundtrack If you want to check out some highlights, there's some great stuff like Follow Me, I Can't Be Cool, and Beauty is Within Us. Also nice are all those chants with the bright complex vocal harmonies.
Yoko Kanno is amazing!
I know she composed and produced the GITS Stand Alone Complex OST but I was not aware she sang on it. As far as I know, the anime's main theme is sung by vocalist Origa.
Kanno did the music for many animes: Cowboy Bebop (of course), and Wolf's Rain. She's a favorite of mine!
Well, some of my favorite bands are:
Pink Floyd
Radiohead
Animal Collective
Neutral Milk Hotel
Pixies
Orb
Hanne Hukkleberg
Menomena
Dismemberment Plan
Modest Mouse
My Bloody Valentine
Wilco
Yo La Tengo
Dig Lazarus Dig is my first Nick Cave album, and I must say I'm really liking it. I've heard its far better than much of their other stuff, which may explain why this is the first time I've seen it on the shelves of Rotherham stores.
The Strokes did it too though, minus the Jam ripping off.
First impressions wasn't too bad though. Actually, it was pretty good.
