THE Guild Wars thread.

Oh okay this thread has no substance to it other than to ask, "zomg lol hay who has the gild warz???>" So far I am aware of Magi, SaiDeathFork, and myself as being the only ones from the town. Soon, maybe Jacket and Patryn will join us. Simply put, we want more of us in this game. :v

To suppliment this thread, a picture of my main character for no reason. Please excuse the eyesore party list, I can't make it GTFO my internet, so I shrank it as best as I could.

Name: Heru Pale
Class: Necromancer/Ranger level 15 :v

We also have a silly little guild going, the 'Brotherhood of Boo'. BoB for short. (Baldurs gate (NOT DARK ALLIANCE) reference for those who don't find it amusing.) And a screenshot of our cape on my awesome necromancer body.

Ouc.

So, anyone else going to get this, or already have it? Share your screenshots and character name(s). :v

Edit: Magi makes me slip this in.

Newbie Crux Crucis and Heru Pale. :v

I heard you don't have to pay monthly for Guild Wars, is that true?

I've always found MMORPG's to be quite fun but the monthly charges were a big big turn off for me.

So far as MMORPGs go, how good is it?

As far as MMORPGs go, everyone likes to claim that it is not an RPG, but instead an online PVP fest or something. Seems like an MMORPG to me though, and I like it. Add the fact that you don't have to pay monthly for it makes it all the better. As far as gameplay mechanics it seems to play about like World of Warcraft, if you need something to compare it to. But strip any MMO to it's core and you'll find everything to be similar. Click, kill, reward. Well, the whole slay monsters to level up aspect is more or less a very inefficient way to play, since they tend to not give much experience, and instead you rely on completing quests to get your experience and skills. One thing that it does to break away from the generic MMORPG mold is to put players in their own play fields, meaning you don't have to put up with kill stealers, item looters, or any other of the lames. Partied people will of corse be with you in this land. At times it makes the world seem lonely, but also allows the developers to use innovative ideas (for an MMORPG) with the world, such as interactive pieces.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
Or dropping a powder keg near a pile of snow, which explodes causing the snow to avalanche down a slope to reveal a secret passage.

. Also, unlike many MMORPGs, there is a backstory which is to a point followed with the quests.

You can take two routes with the game if you wish, first is to do the "roleplaying" aspect. In roleplaying you start at level 1, and work your way unlocking skills, runes, and pieces to upgrade weapons which are made available to you in the second aspect once unlocked. I heard the max level was 20, but you can still gain skill points and new skills. (Perhaps even attribution points?).

In the PVP aspect, well, your character will automatically be at the highest level, and can use anything you've unlocked in the roleplaying portion. This is what i've heard, not personal experience, so i'm not certain if this is true. We've yet to try it. :v

Its not an MMORPG, its an Online RPG. Hence why they can get away without fees, the same way a game like Diablo II can, its not really that groundbreaking.

I really do want to try it, but my computer is teh crappy.

I don't quite understand that angle. They still have to foot the fees just like any MMORPG since they run everything from their servers, without the option of you hosting your own. In fact, I see no reason whatsoever for it to not be an MMORPG, except MAYBE the fact all non-town areas are devoid of other players except those in your party.

Guild Wars is better. WoW is just a bad game, from a gameplay stand-point, just like all the others of a similar nature.

Why? Because it's a grind? And Guild Wars has no resemblance of this?

And from a game-play stand point, there is no doubt things that WoW has that GW does not. For instance, the limited skill system is stupid. It's not strategic, it just limits your class. 150 skills, but you can only use 8? Even if all 8 skills are incredibly useful and the perfect setup, I don't see the reason for such a harsh limit.

Also, I find strictly instanced gameplay gets boring. One of the reasons I play Online RPGs is because you are part of a world. You have friends and enemies that are around at all times. By making all PvE content instance, what competition is there? There is bonuses for making it instanced for sure, because you can create events that is just not possible in a seamless world (for example in WoW, ShadowFang Keep was one of the most memorable things I have done) but I also find it fun to wander around the world, exploring, doing random quests, and outwitting (or defeating) enemy players at nearly any point of the adventure.

PvP I'm not so sure about. I do think its an important part of an Online RPG, as it is the main source of competition in a genre that typically encourages cooperation. PvP WoW is quite drab at the moment, since there is no clear cut goals (some say class balance is also a problem, but theres enough complexities that I'm not going to bother trying to get into that arguement) They tried to give a goal to PvP with the Honor System, which is welcome but adds little. It's basically a grinding system which guises itself by giving ranks and special rewards (meaning in pretty much all regards the same as PvE). Hopefully Battlegrounds will provide the much needed purpose, or maybe Blizzard will wise up and make actual "Contested" territories that you can fight to control, rather than just areas where you can be ganked.
Since I don't know how well Guild Wars does PvP, I won't bother trying to make a comparasion.

The final reason (and pretty much the only one that matters) why I am playing WoW right now instead of Guild Wars is because it provides a massive experience for anyone, whether you play hardcore or casual, like to compete or cooperate, or if you like to solo or party. Also, I do believe that WoW has a suitable counter to GW's lack of monthly fees. WoW is easily the most system friendly MMORPG out right now. The cost of upgrading my computer to the GW specs can be the same as a good amount of monthly fees.

Sorry to go off on a pretty pointless rant and derail the topic a bit, but theres no reason for everyone to go on acting like WoW is terrible just because they like Guild Wars better. WoW has merits just as I'm sure Guild Wars has its own. Besides, I'm just distracting myself from this stupid english assignment I'm supposed to be doing =p

Also, since I did finally get a fricken job, this definately is a game I would like to try. So maybe I'm just a raving idiot and end up joining you guys soon Smile

Well, actually you can use all 150 skills. You can only take eight with you per mission. It's a strategic device that really forces you to plan what to bring with you and furthers the uniqueness of each player. Few players are always carrying the same skill at a single time.

Instanced gameplay isn't for everyone. It's a great device for people like me who don't devote all their free time to it because the PvE in Guild Wars is extensive. The world is incredibly massive and its impossible to explore it all in under a month unless you're trying to rush through the game without enjoying it.

Maybe so, but then again it depends on how you're willing to play the game. If you're into roleplaying in an online RPG the instanced areas aren't really that big of a drag, seeing as how you can have eight people with you at any given time. However the MMO'er who often will solo or spends much of their time in combat, those people will be obviously turned off by guild wars. However since I was never fond of fighting millions of monsters to gain levels, Guild Wars is appealing to me for that aspect. Plus like you noted the structure of the mission-driven game simply wouldn't allow the entire would to be massively multiplayer. It's a double edged sword that ultimately puts your preferences on the line.

I don't mind playing massively online games at all, but seeing as how I don't like to pay monthly subscriptions for my games I think Guild Wars is the better choice for me on a personal level.

Erm not loaded it up yet due to the fact the disc has a dirty great chunk taken out of it (That's ASDA for you :gay: ) but don't you have to reacha certain place to have a group of 8? Or are a group and a guild different?

Offline

Hm, well, Yeah you do need to reach a certain place to have a group of 8. At the very beginning you can group with only 1 other person. There is no real need to group with more since everything is sinchy, excluding of corse the charr. After you leave the beginning area, and into the next part of the game; you will be available for a party of 4. It keeps incrementing by 2 each area it seems.

Groups and Guilds are in fact different. Groups are just people of any loyalty to any guild (or merely just friends who are not guilded) travelling together, completing quests, or what have you. Guilds on the other hand, is everyone sharing a common banner to identify them as part of a larger group (this can include benefits such as having a group of people you already know or will soon know to help you out when in need, global chat with your guild friends using the guild channel, guild hall, and GvG in the PvP once a guild hall is obtained.) Anywho, once you get loaded up, be sure to leave your character name so we can invite you into the guild, or try to PM Crux Crucis, Heru Pale or Jonothan Crowe in game.

Some popular choices during alpha were Warrior-Monk, Monk-Ranger and Ranger-Necro. Do these classes still kick more ass than any of the others? Warrior-Monks were practically indestructable, especially in PvP where they just took everyone down. Ranger was a great support class to Monk, so when not desperately trying to keep every other bugger alive, the monk could do some serious damage. Ranger-Necro was fun, too, being able to leech considerable amounts of health whilst multi-arrowing every other bugger to death.

To my knowledge, depending on how you play, any class can be viable in PVP. I also know that they toned down somethings, while bringing up others in regards to strength, but I do not have specifics.

Mine works excellently.

I stand far away, cast a couple of firestorms on an enemy which nearly kills 'em, then arrow them while they are still far away.

Class. Plus any hits don't matter as rangers recover at double spee without spells!

While there never is a win-all strategy, warrior/monks are VERY easy to take down with the right stuff.

Personally, I'd use power spike/spirit shackles in moderation on a warrior monk from a distance, and when the unsuspecting fool comes in close enough, a nice little signet of midnight will make sure he can't even lay a finger on me with his sword. If there were such things as a 1v1 PvP, the warrior would get smashed by this strategy.

Personally, I found the Monk/Mesmer character to be very promising. A monk with inspiration magic becomes that much more valuable to the team, as he'll be able to use mantras, as well as inspiration magic like energy drain, an incredibly valuable skill in combat.

I've been contemplating getting this for a while now, but I'm still hooked on Neverwinter Nights (Path of Ascension mod kicks butt). But I'm not sure if it's worth it. I mean, what's the whole concept behind it? Is it like Baldur's Gate when played online? You basically play the single player campaign, except instead of controlling 6 members, you only get 1, and the other members are other controlled by other people? Or is it more like... you become a member of a guild, then you go out and kill monsters maybe on the way to complete a quest, and if you run into a different party, you can go and kill them too?

How exactly does it work?

Offline

Well, I'm most liken it to Diablo II, online. Essentially, there is one main story arch split into however many missions there are in the game. The missions are discreet - travelling to them is instanteous (although one can take the long route), where upon you find yourself a group of people in an Outpost (it's a staging area for a mission), then enter. It takes you to an instanced mission where you and your party can interact with the environment to a limited extent, and unveils more of the story, also opening up subsequent missions in the story arch. There are also PvP missions, which is where Guilds are involved.

Fun game, I just don't play enough hah. I always find it hard to start playing, but when I finally get to it, it's alot of fun. I'm not sure as to whether or not I'll be able to play again after this summer so I may not be very beneficial in a guild. Depends on whether or not I get a new graphics card/get my current one fixed. My preference would be the first choice but that most likely/will not happen.

Anyway, I've made various characters, my highest level was 9 but I deleted him and now I have a lvl 5 Warrior/Mesmer named Adeon Arwes. I'll level some more tonight most likely, so look for me Wink
