Jobs and Careers

First, I'd like to note that I did a search for "jobs" and "career", sadly not "job" because the search won't let me search for any words under four characters long. Thusly, I could not find such a post. So, I shall carry on.

Just curious as to what people are up to, employment-wise, or what they've been doing recently regarding employment of their services.

I, myself, have recently acquired a job at Future Shop as a Level 1 Computer Technician, and soon-ish, I'll be taking the (two) exams to get my A+ Certification. On the same not regarding Computer Technology, I was taking a course at the local college(Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, aka SIAST, Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon, SK, CA) for Computer Systems Technology, and during my second year, I didn't do so well regarding my Advanced Networking class and got a swift kick out. None the less, I'm not entirely stupid and I'm a technician anyway.

Prior(and slightly during the beginning of it) to Future Shop, I was a lowly Food/Grocery Clerk at Safeway(a grocery store). The people were great to work with, but it sucked. It kind-of kept me fit, though.

Also, worth noting: During the wait to find out if I had the job at FS, I was also doing interviews with a company out of Saskatoon. The company is called Point2, and they are a software development company. The job I had applied for was a Support/Help Desk rep to deal with their Real Estate software. Part of me regrets not attempting to get the job and taking the Future Shop one instead. The only reason I took FS over Point2 was because I had already had three interviews with FS and they called me the day before my second interview with Point2. Oh well, it is in my past, and I merely learn from my mistakes.

Anyways, enough about me, what about you all? Oh, and I hope I'm not being to prying, I'm just trying to get some conversation going. It seems too quiet in this town.

Pun intended? Laugh I'm not sure if we've ever had a proper topic on the subject of employment; I guess the reason why a lot of people might post on here is to drag themselves away from the dreary world of work(!).

Congratulations on the new job though! I think really, given the current job climate, you've done extremely well. I guess you are probably thinking wistfully of what the other job might have been like, but I wouldn't dwell too much on it - I'm sure you'll enjoy your new job. Better than working in Safeway, I'm sure! (We used to have Safeways but no longer; not sure if they were part of the same group..).

I haven't had a great deal of luck recently, unfortunately: whilst at uni I worked in a local clothes store - again the people were great, the stories memorable and it kept me afloat during academia, though I wanted to move onto something a bit more interesting. I hadn't really had any office experience prior to this current job, so I was pretty much snubbed for everything I went for. At the moment I'm working as a clerical/admin assistant at my local hospital, which doesn't sound all that exciting (and in truth it's not that exciting), but I've really warmed to it. The people are lovely, and quite pleased to have, pardon my arrogance, someone with a bit of intelligence to help them - as a result I've already been involved in some quite significant projects within the hospital, and have more to come. I've been for a few interviews regarding what I really want to do - I want to get into editing/publishing ideally, though nothing has come out of those yet alas. I've a much stronger position, now, though, and now I am earning I don't have to worry as much about trying to pursue some of my own little (writing/musical) projects in the interim too!

I'm in electrical wholesale distribution...as a sales specialist and materials transportation director...those are my fancy ways of saying I sell and deliver electrical parts to contractors :Eyesroll: I spend an average of 6 hours on the road every day, plus two hours making my commute to and from work. Between my job and commuting, I log about 85,000 miles a year and have lately been wondering why I don't just become a long-haul trucker and make double the money I'm making now...

As long as you're enjoying your current state, then it is all good. The reason jobs are a little easy for me is because for one, I'm from Canada, where the recession isn't AS bad, and for two, I'm from the province of Saskatchewan, which was the least affected of all the Canadian provinces, which is ironic as it is the poorest of all the provinces. It just happened that our economy started to boom right before, and so we're staying at a stand-still of sorts.

On a more important note: Thank you, CSC. Smile It's nice to have a decent job. With having to pay off $11000, it was well needed.

:lol3: If you like driving, then go for your licence and pull a truck for a few years and make some good grip, sir. But actually your job sounds interesting, minus the transporting goods. I'm not much of a truck driver, I like small cars that I can stand taller than.

Hehe, it's not a very interesting job. Sometimes we have idiots come in and expect us to basically wire their house for them, from setting up their service to installing every damn switch and receptacle in the house...and the driving used to be fun. Most of the miles I put on are highway miles driving through some beautiful mountain country in northwestern Montana, and I see bear, bald eagles, moose, bighorn sheep, whitetails, blue herons, and elk all the time. But with the privilege of seeing all that comes the bad stuff: I've hit my fair share of deer (one was a really nice 4 point buck but hitting it at 70mph didn't quite kill it...fortunately a fellow behind me was carrying his revolver in his pickup and was able to end its suffering) and seeing two black bear cubs dead in the middle of the highway (still kicking and writhing after being hit!) yeah that was pretty depressing Frown

Seeing that must have been tough egg...
I don't think I'd manage to be in the delivery service since I'm very sensitive to car sickness.

Like Karl I don't have a paying job yet.
I'm still working at starting my graphic novel career and later into an animation career or game character designer. Either way I want to go into animation. So far I have managed to make a comic ( still finishing up the title page and last page before I scan and post it anywhere ) so far I'm close to completing my first pilot issue of revolution which I'm gonna try sell at to the local book store and hopefully earn some side cash for video-games and stuff, I know, it may not be a very typical office job but it's what I love to do. Draw manga and day dream about aliens and space.
My mother want's me to take over her career when she retires which is tourism, If it involves going around the world and looking for new places to market I'm definitely in no doubt but if it involves balancing accounts and boring office stuff
( which involves business maths like accounting )I think it's safe to say I'd rather be a pizza guy.
I hope one day I'll manage to live my dream...

Notice:
Need a face-set or character sketch/concept P.M me. I draw mostly manga style though and it might take roughly a week

*sigh* If only I could find a job. I worked a Domino's until a few months ago. Unemployed since then and living off of UI. But, that'll run out before too much longer and there's hardly a job to be found within a hundred miles of my home.

Still, it's not all bad. I use the time to catch up on my reading(Recently discovered A Game Of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, the first in the series A Song of Ice and Fire. Check it out, it's amazing.) and managed to get a bit of work done on my novel. If you ask nicely, I might even share it!=D

There are four truths in life that all must come to terms with:
1. I will die and all that I am will cease to be.
2. I am born alone and will die alone. I can never truly know another.
3. The suffering in my life is my own creation. I create my reality through my choices.
4. ALL meaning is arbitrary and relative. Life is ultimately meaningless.

I have a job over at the church just south of my house. I'm the custodian there, charged with opening and closing for the meeting every Sunday. I also have to remove the garbage there and clean the place twice a week.

Other than that, I don't have much. I do the lawn for my neighbour's nearby, and am looking for a culinary job (I have plenty of cooking experience).

I don't really have a job - I'm a full time student between school years right now - but I do a lot of freelance IT contracting for some public schools near where I live. Broadband access is pretty terrible where I live, so I've been helping the schools by setting up their networks to combine multiple high-speed connections into one giant super-fast connection. The pay isn't too bad for a student, but I do wish there were more hours.

But I am a full-time college student starting this fall, majoring in chemistry. I'm really not sure where I'm headed with it, but I'm thinking about getting into the pharmaceutical industry after college. That's still a long way off though.

So you are a fellow Canadian K-Wulff? Interesting indeed.

As for myself, I simply work at a family owned restaurant, doing many of the jobs (kitchen and customers), I had finished a course in Culinary Arts, which I believe some of you might know already, but I wish to pay off my student loan, save up for more college, and go for the required courses to start my own business. I aim to open a Cyber Cafe/Arcade, with its own LAN room, among other things. I could bake most if not all of my own goods, since I am experienced in such things.

Yeeah! Cyber cafes are awesome! There used to be a really great one near where I live that had Alienware computers... sadly, it was in a really bad location, and so it ended up going out of business within a year. Frown

But seriously, that's a really awesome goal. I really hope you succeed - cyber cafes are among my favorite places to go. And please have iced coffee on the menu Sticking Out Tongue

Uhhh.... Let's have a look at the maths of this situation.

E = My Entertainment level (between 1 and 10)
J = Fun at job
H = Hours
C = Fun on computer

CH{divided by} JH = E

At the moment job is at 1, because I don't have one.

When I get a job, J will be at 1,0000000,00,0,0,00,000,000,000,000,00000,00,0,00,00,0000
So, lets redo the eqaution when I have a job

5{divided by} 1,0000000,00,0,0,00,000,000,000,000,00000,00,0,00,00,0000 = small

Simple. Laugh

Now I feel proud to say that I do have a job

I'm a bilingual support techinican.

mostly is receiving calls (in both spanish and english) about persons with troubleshoot problems
the job is good and all but sometimes the client's attitude ruins it big time

apparently some jerks believe we have a magic button somewhere on our desks that once pressed
solves their PC problems plus midlife crisis...
and (get this:) they eventually blame US for whatever reason their PC's (or phones) get crashed etc...

(and then again it wouldn't surprise me if we suddenly did start to have these, but in that case why waste
it on some ignorant drug junkie who calls at 12:00pm?)

it's a good job if you are trained on the arts of being tolerant to the client.

and yes I've met persons who don't even know what a space-bar is..... but hey all in a days work.

The project still lives!

You're the guy I ring up when my computer's not working, and tells me to "Please hold"? *eye twitching*
Jks, that must be a pretty fun job sometimes though, I'd just act like the ringer was a complete buffon, and tell him stuff he already knows, then tell him to "Please don't get angry with me, sir, I'm just trying to help." *eye twitching more crazily*

Oh, and you're bilingual, I would speak crazy, super quick Spanish to an english customer... lol

Hmm that explained all the help I got for my virus outbreak...

I'm in collage to ( going after this holiday ). Like Null I have a long way till I can begin the great rat race. Sometimes I wish money didn't control everything you know so I could just laze around and do whatever I feel without having to worry about a job right Karl.
Guess I'll be looking forward to an early retirement once I save enough money to live on a small shak on like Zanzibar with nothing to do but stare at the sun and get baked and sell sea shells.... I would say Canada but too cold. Nice place though...
