This is really hard for me emotionally...
While I have the fondest memories of Final Fantasy 7, I recently had a blast going through Final Fantasy 5 again... and mastering all of the jobs. Wink I love that game. I guess I'll go for 7, though. -_- Conformist.

7 is the only good one in terms of story and that's because it is poorly translated; much of the plot is therefore inferred than dictated - I don't believe this is deliberate but it is better because of it.

Pre-VII games are travesties when it comes to plot, although the gameplay, if it can so be called, is satisfying. Can't stand 8, 9 is pleasant enough, 10 is poor again and I haven't played the later ones.

FF9 all the way, 8 had the potential to be good, hell I still love the whole gunblade concept but they screwed up too many things in it for it to really shine.

I like all that I've played, although my criteria for 'favourite games' are those that fill me with a bastardised sense of awe, and make me grin incessantly.

FFIX fits that criteria.

Fucking FFX-2 all the way, goddamit! FF9 follows second, but X-2 is the shizzle. I love its non-linearity, its old-school style, and it's definitely the most fun to play. The story was relatively simple, and some of the ideas were very well concieved. For example I loved how Spira had factionalised (Youth League Vs. New Yevon).

There were parts I disliked though. Like how Paine, Nooj, Baralai, and Gimmal were formerly friends. They should have been bitter enemies from the get-go, especially considering that the Al Bhed and Yevonites didn't get on in the first place (PLOT HOLE).

In short: it was flawed but fun. Also you actually had a chance in the battles with the Garment Grid. No ridiculous levelling up for hours and hours.

A sig should be here, but the oppressive tyranny that has its iron fist clenched around our liberty has denied me my god-given (I have not capitalised the word 'god' because let's be realistic: he doesn't exist!) free speech.

X-2 is definately on of the most enjoyable.. its pretty corny and really silly but thats what's enjoyable about it.. Its doesn't get to tiredsome like X.. though I have yet to beat it..

but yeah.. 8 is my personal favorite.. I like how the characters actaully act their age.. and aside for the really lame plot twist the story is decent.. plue Laguna > just about every other ff character.. err except Cid from 7.

What do you expect? If people didn't go for what looks nice every so often, whores would be out of a job.

I'm going to run down the list quickly. Okay, Final Fantasy 1 was, well, classic, but being a plot kind of guy, you have to drop it. 2 was okay for plot back in the days when plot in games didn't really exist. 3 was pretty much just like 1. By 4 we're getting somewhere, but a combination of not being able to pick your party and some annoying characters put me off. 5, meh, the job system was okay, but I found the character relationships got rather redundant as we saw the same old thing with the same characters over and over, rather than seeing them with new sides.

Final Fantasy 6 I enjoyed quite a bit. I always enjoyed the idea of history repeating itself in some way, as long as there were differences (hence why I'm not as big a Lufia fan as I could be) and such. When it comes to odd villains who also have that nice touch of insanity, Kefka fit the bill, more so than Kuja, whom I'll mention later. Plus, a bunch of the character did have a bunch of sides to them, except of course the bonus characters (Umaro, Mog, Gogo...) but the others were great.

Final Fantasy 7 I also loved, for pretty much everything. A mentally unstable hero (better than the one in Chrono Cross too) along with lots of stuff to do and plenty of colorful characters. Graphics suck, but since when has that stopped me?

Final Fantasy 8, well, two characters ruined it for me. One was Zell. Dear Buddha how I hate Zell. The other? The annoyingly cute Selphie. And as far as heroes go, I felt Squall changed too fast. Pretty good game, but two characters who I think could have worked much better with a few changes and hero whom you see in a fair amount of RPGs make me say no.

Final Fantasy 9, well. Okay, I freaking hate Zidane. Not because he's got a tale. Not because he's short (Isn't he only like two inches shorter than Cloud anyhow?) but because of what a moron he is. That and how there always seemed to be six cut-scenes in every new map just annoyed me. Character development was great, but once again the hero and the gameplay make me shake my head.

X and X-2, well, the plot went somewhere, stopped, and suddenly picked up again in X. I have to say the big bad guy was pretty interesting though, even if the final boss was a breeze. X-2, well, I have no problem with magical girl animes, but in games I just shake my head.

XI was online and costs too much. No way am I going to praise it.

XII has most bizzare blend of technology yet, even more so that 7 or X. It also seems to have the same flaws as IX, which is hardly a surprise. The new system is okay, but I think it could use work. An acceptable game, but I wasn't too impressed.

So, pretty much its VI and VII, no suprise there. What I narrowed it down to was how well the hero worked. When I looked at VI and realized that while certain characters are focused on a lot during certain parts of the game that there is no hero, I cast my vote. A non-linear pre-final battle bit, a large group of heroes and a library of great magic with an easy-to-use system, Final Fantasy VI has my vote.

Good, bad, I'm the mod with the gun.

...............................

I'll have you know Final Fantasy I had THE best plot of the Final Fantasies.
"teh orbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET THE~"
"i am garland"

...
Good summary ok.

Since I was playing Final Fantasy I before I could read, one of the first words I learned to spell was "ineffective" because every f*cking time you select to hit an enemy that was already killed that round, you see the word "ineffective" and it does no damage. -_-x Oh I also learned "annihilated" pretty quickly too. Pronounced it hella wrong, though. ("DAD, I was annie-hillinated!!!")

I feel bad because I always take Final Fantasy VI for granted. I remember getting it for my birthday in second grade. It's so classic... and I am very proud of the esper system. I'm also fond of having a lot of characters... and even took the time to develop all of them. What a nice, epic game. :') Man I feel so bad for taking you granted VI... seriously... I mean I didn't even mention it in my last post.

I loved Final Fantasy 9 the most. I thought Zidane was awesome hilarious. Vivi was freaking adorable/awesome, I actually own a plushie of the little guy. Dagger was one of the most boring female protagonists in the entire Final Fantasy series until somewhere in the third disc, but at least after that point she was pretty sweet. The rest of the characters were great too.

Also, the setting and atmosphere of the whole game were wonderful. It started off lighthearted and then it got really intense. And it didn't just try way too hard to be deep and angsty like FF7 and FF8. ESPECIALLY FF8. FF7 actually had a pretty good balance of angst and other stuff, and it's probably my second favorite FF game.

FF8 had potential. I really, really wanted to like it. Eventually I got used to the battle system and actually kind of liked using the Draw system and GFs and stuff, and I found characters I liked, the Laguna sub-plot was fun/interesting, and of course everything was beautiful. But then in the second disc the STUPIDEST PLOT TWIST IN THE WORLD happens and then Squall goes from apathetic to compassionate about EVERYTHING in like two seconds and right around that point my game crashed and it turned out that one of my "friends" swapped his broken FF8 disc 2 with my working one. Anyways, I never had the desire to play it again afterwards.

I tried really hard to like FFX and FFX-2 as well. But it's like the only thing it had going for it was graphics. I tried to focus on plot and other fun things but FFX's story is so... clunky. And FFX-2 wasn't even trying. There were a few interesting changes but in the end everything deteriorated to "HI I'M YUNA I USED TO BE AN INNOCENT SUMMONER BUT NOW I AM A SPHERE HUNTER WITH ALMOST NO CLOTHES! HERE ARE MY SEXY FRIENDS! WE WILL SPEND THE NEXT THIRTY HOURS GETTING INTO AS MANY COMPROMISING POSITIONS AND INNUENDO-PRODUCING SITUATIONS AS POSSIBLE! ALSO RIKKU HAS GONE FROM BEING REALLY BADASS IN THE FIRST GAME TO SAYING THINGS LIKE 'YUNIE-POO' AND 'DISSASTERRIFFIC'! GIRL POWER LOL'. I get kind of bitter when I think about these games.

The NES games were really fun in a shallow way, and I always had trouble really getting into the SNES FFs but at least appreciated them.

But anyway, it makes me really happy that there are more than 0 FF9 fans out there besides me.

Guess who's back!

FF VI all the way. By far, it has some of the strongest character development I've ever seen in any Final Fantasy (aside from the optional chars, but that's why they're optional). It isn't like most RPGs, where you get to know a lot about the main character and a little bit about the other chars. There was no real main character and I feel it helped the game a lot. I also liked how it was amazingly non-linear for a game of its time, yet it was still focused and story-driven. FFVI was also very low on filler battles. I also enjoyed the fact that you don't have to sit around and level to progress in the game. Not only did this remove the tediousness that plagues many RPGs, but also immensely affected the flow of the game, in a positive way. The evil villain role was executed beautifully with Kefka. The mapping styles and music they used also seemed to fit the mood of the game beautifully. Add the beautifully fleshed-out story and you have a winning combination.

PS: I absolutely abhor FFX, FFX-2, and FFXI.

I didn't actually think Dagger was all that much either, until she took Zidane's dagger and I thought she was going to die, that was emotional >_>. What did amaze me was how long I was able to stay interested in levelling her up despite the fact that I had no idea if/when she would be able to use her Eidolons.

EDIT: I voted for 9 Smile

FF9 all the way. It's just purely enjoyable from beginning to end. Was thinking about starting a new game the other day.

I voted FF7.

It's possibly helped by nostalgia for me, but I think it has a great story/characters, there are some truly emotional bits in there. Not to mention it has THE best music in the series. Also, the side-quests/mini-games are great.

I'm playing through it again now, and I still think it packs the same punch as it used to. The only thing that brings it down is the graphics, but it's easy not to get worked up about that. I think some of the battle scenes are fantastic anyway, they truly take advantage of the 3d graphics, and I don't remember the later ones doing that much.

I also thoroughly enjoyed FF9 though, and i'll probably play that again sometime in the future, but I still feel FF7 wins it for me.

EDIT: It's also worth noting that 7 and 9 are the only two i've actually played all the way through.

I'll do like BMZ and go through the list (though probably less in depth) I typed this really fast so I'm sure there are tons of spelling mistakes:

FF1- Eh, I guess it has the nostalgia factor, but it was just damn boring and... there wasnt much to it... so yeah
2: Played like an hour, and the levleing seemed needlessly complicated
3: Um... basically just a watered down version of 5 that didnt seem to make a lot of sense. lame
4: As BMZ said, this is were you're getting a lot more focus on story and such. I reall liked Cecil and cain for some reason. How can you resist a 5 person party? Definatly a lot of good things about this one, but it falls short somehow. You can see square is going somewhere though
5: I love love LOVE the job system, when its done right. In a lot of ways this game really set up how we think about FF as a whole. ie: "so and so is like a blue mage" or "oh, she has white magic". Not to say this didnt exsist before, but it certianly set a trend. Story and charas were ass though. You'd prolly be hard pressed to remember the main characters names (Batz, Ferris, Gualf... and I forget the other two girls names. Clara maybe and... oh who knows)
6: A lovely game indeed. Its tempting to say this is my favorite... it very well might be. I love the idea of an ensemble cast, and how can you not love the over the top Kefka? Magic and skills in this game I felt ambivilant about. Its certainly intuitive, but it always makes me nervous when it takes a lot of time to learn skills (like in 9)
7: Say what you will about the story, but the graphics were ass, even for its time. This doesnt mean I'm a graphics whore either. I'd be happy playing an SNES or NES game any day as long as things resemble what they should (ff6 is a good example. Not really fancy graphics, but you can tell what a character looks like). Also the enviornments were nice, but they were so busy, and Square knew it. Thats why they put in the exit indicator option. Story... I wont get into that because I'll be lynched. That isnt to say its an AWFUL game, it just doesnt deserve the praise it gets
8: As other said, it started out nice, with very interesting characters, but it just becasme silly. Draw and juncture were neat ideas, but somewhat confusing
9: Very fun and cute. It was like a really fun fantasy cartoon, with just enough plot to not make it sacrine. As I said, I'm not fun of that magic system, but it was okay. Still, the ending bothered me. 9, is very very fun, but the last boss came out of nowhere. Other ff games do this, but 9 is the biggest perp
10: I hesitate calling it a masterpiece, but 10 got so many things right. The shere grid is possibly the biggest advance in skill learning I've ever seen. My complaint with it would only be is that people had a very strict path most of the time, so they couldnt learn other stuff until much later. I heard International fixed this problem. I loved Seymour for some reason. His reasoning is so bizarre for what he does, but you can see how it may make sense to a crazy person. I love how they played the whole death thing... someone else once aptly said this is a very eastern story, and I agree. Still, that may turn some people off, and yes I agree Tidus was a bit annoying.
X-2: Fun for what it was. Campy, light, fast. Its not supposed to be taken too seriously!
11: havnt played, hear its very problematic
12: Looks promising, but I'm getting to the point of aggitation with it many delays

X was far too linear, unless you were stupidly levelled, which is boring. X-2 was fresh for a while but got just as boring.

X was certeainly linear, but it lent itself to the cinematic style. Thats not for everyone of course, but a lot of peple, including myself, liked it. Love it or hate it, you have to admit X did something new in mixing different sensibilities.

I have to say 7, because I just adore the plot... and I almost feel a connection to cloud... gameplay was very fun in my opinion, the materia system was very cool, much better than the drawing/junctioning system in 8.

X is fun until you try to play it again.. once through and then is completely boring, uninteresting, and just plain tedious.

The thing that I think made 7 enjoyable is the amazing enviroment graphics. I don't think a game has set such a mood since then.

All of my favourite games have awesome soundtracks... Chrono Trigger, Suikoden 2, Earthbound, Final Fantasy 7, Silent Hills, etc. Yeah? Yeah. I'm trying to determine if music being awesome in a game makes everything else following suit.

y'know it honestly seems like the developers contact the composers 1st to write the whole soundtrack so they can make the game around it haha..

but seriously, it does seem that if a game has bad music then the general opinion about the game will be that its bad. regaurdless of the games other features. hehe and I'm talking about 1st impressions here.

well nobuo uematsu (spelling?) is an amazing composer... and with the way his music fits into the games is almost like he is in the game and feels the story, and writes his music to help portray it... he is just an outstanding composer...

I've only actually played VIII, IX, X and X-2. 8 got me into final fantasy to begin with and I really enjoyed it. I didn't like 9 so much... no reason really, I just didn't. 10 is a lot of fun until close to the end where you just get bored. 10-2 was too weird for me, the plot, garment grid thingy, all that was just not appealing to me. I have to say overall I liked 8 the best.

I have only played the first three Final Fantasies on the Wonderswan remake, and the only one I liked was 2. I'm going to list 'em, not because I think it'd interest people, but because I have been so absorbed in WoW that I haven't given Final Fantasy any attention at all, even though I wanted to. Maybe this'll raise my motivation for playing 'em again.

Final Fantasy II

The only FF I've played and haven't finished. I was pretty impressed with the story and attention to character personalities (as unnoticable as they were), considering when the game was made. I also think the FF2 world map theme is the best in the series.

Final Fantasy IV

Playing this game was as amusing as watching Torque. And watching Torque was amusing - it gave you a laugh and you knew it's silly yet you simply had to keep watching it. Looking back, the game was, in my opinion, inferior to FF5+ and even FF2. Silly, unmemorable characters, decent graphics and I can't remember a single track. This is the only FF I didn't really like.

Final Fantasy V

A great one. This is the FF all of my friends liked and finished - even the ones who didn't like FF7 (*gasp*). Boring characters, nice graphics, nice music and the job system is awesome. It also has quite a replay value, and I do plan on playing it again.

Final Fantasy VI

This one I'm unsure about. I think it's an absolutely huge step from FFV in terms of graphics, music, characters, plot, gameplay and pretty much anything else, yet something keeps me from playing this game, even if I want to. I tried playing it today, and just couldn't tolerate it... which is weird, because this game is a piece of art.

Final Fantasy VII

We all just love FF7 (or 90% of us, anyway), and it's just so obvious why. The best plot in the series, wonderful characters, outstanding visuals, impressive music, a great Materia system (which adds a lot to the replay value) and wisdom you wouldn't expect to find in a video game.

Final Fantasy VIII

The Junction system was awful, the characters were shallow and it made you lose interest too many times. That said, I adore this game. For me, this game is the opposite of FF6 - you know it's terribly flawed, but you just can't stop loving it.

Final Fantasy IX

My favorite Final Fantasy, my favorite RPG, my favorite video game. It's not the wonderful characters, the breath-taking music, the amazing graphics or the lovable characters that make me worship this game - it's the mood. Like CSC said, this is a game that will make you smile from the beginning to the end, and I can only wish any future Final Fantasy will be half as good as FF9.

Final Fantasy X

I loved this game the first time I played it, and even called it my favorite FF for a while. I guess it's the hype of the new (and occasionally nasty) voice acting, the fantastic visuals and the much enjoyable battle system and Sphere Grid, but looking back it isn't nearly as good as I wanted it to be. It's so frustratingly linear, and some characters should not have been there (think Kimahri). The lack of a real villain was a bit of a pain as well (and no, I don't consider Seymour FFX's badguy).
