An Explanation

Stagnation.

It's been a major problem on the Palace and Town for nearly two and a half years. Nearly every facet of this site has remained the same as far as progress is concerned. Yes, we have witnessed many changes and alterations, but none of them have pushed us forward. For the longest time - I am ashamed to say - I was content with having my own power in the administration and just leaving things at that. That was a mistake. I was doing nothing to help the progress of the Palace or the community itself. I often gave up my own motions for things that I felt may have helped the Town, simply because I thought that I should always yield to my co-administrators. I was too passive and any good ideas I had were often shot down due to my own lack of motivation.

I decided to rectify the situation. I am going to be straightforward and honest with how things occured because I want this to be the beginning of a new chapter for the Town. I want us to be able to see eye to eye and be honest with eachother. But in order to reach such a level, I had to drop down a few - but realize that it was only temporary and for what I felt best.

Back in February, I approached Magi with some concerns I had with the forum. After much discussion with him, he and I agreed that things were in worse shape than they looked, if you really thought about it. We decided that we weren't getting anywhere, any time soon with our current structure. So we devised a plan. It started with him getting me a cpanel account. Maxy never really acted as though he wanted me to have a cpanel account, so in order to avoid him finding out and us having to explain it, we named it to look like another account for Magi (I think it was magideuce or something like that) and Magi would tell him that it was a test/backup account for himself. Luckily, we never had to explain that. Knowing how much Maxy and Magi had worked together concerning the backbone of the site and domain, Magi managed to obtain access to the ownership of the domain itself. He convinced Maxy to give him partial access, just in case any security reasons demanded it. This was at the beginning of March. Through a few corner-cuts, Magi managed to get his permissions nearly to full on the domain itself over time. Soon, he also put me in position for the same sort of account, which we also managed to keep hidden from Maxy. (This one was not quite as worrying as people rarely check that sort of thing in a domain administration panel.) We decided to keep things quiet for a while. We would pick things back up when we felt it was time. Magi came to me last week and said that he believed we needed to act soon or else we ran the risk of one of the accounts being discovered. I agreed with him, but I told him to give me one more week to make sure we had everything in order. He agreed. Moments ago, I made the moves that I felt were necessary. Using the accounts I had been given, I removed both Magi and Maxy's access on the domain account, the actual hosted space, the cpanel and the FTP. PaulC also had an administrative FTP account which I removed. I also removed them from the administration group on this forum. I did this because I felt that I could not work effectively with those who are helping to hold the Town in it's state of no-progress, even regression.

That is how we got to where we are now. I realize that it was not the "nicest" or "most polite" way to do things, but I felt like it was the best opportunity and the fastest route towards our progress. I would like to focus on the moment.

I have many plans for this site. I would like to broaden it's horizons and make it a better site. This includes expanding outside of the world of RPG's and even video games. You all know how much I love this forum - it's the reason I did all of this, to begin with - and I need your help to make things work. I want us to keep positive, and try to work together, so that this is a community oriented site, as we once hoped to achieve. I do not want to see us turned totally negative. People who have nothing but negativity on their minds will not be permitted to help us along, and will be suspended. I hate removing permission to forum use, but priviledges will be removed from those who do not wish to help build on the board.

As a further step forward, I have decided to remove the current moderation, and will be accepting a few people as global-moderators immediately. You may post in this thread if you are interested, but keep in mind that I am only looking for people who are willing to help me push the site ahead.

Thanks in advance for being understanding, and I look forward to working on the site to make it better. Smile

Well that was an interesting read. ...

But uhh... there are parts of it I don't understand... what with all that "FTP" and "cpanel" suchnot. Could you put it in "lame man's terms" or whatever the expression is? Is Magi okay? He's not hurt is he?... Ohh....

well I'm always willing to help the town.. though I'm not good at websites or anything.. and I think I'm a bit to laid back for mod-dom..
I've been trying to get some more people. to come to the town. but they never seem to stay *tear*..

CPanel is the admin control panel and FTP is a protocol used to upload files.

As enlightening as all this… exposition of your devious and cunning machinations is, it leaves me with a few unanswered questions, namely:
1. What?
2. The?
3. Fuck?

The logic behind stealthily removing everyone else who was maintaining this site from their positions because you were too shy to do things when they were around can be roughly characterized as stupid, or more specifically really goddamn stupid. Why you felt the need to do this instead of bringing up your suggestions or glimmering vision or whatever the hell it is I don't know.

In short - you, glorious leader, have lost the proverbial "it."

I may be risking my access to the forums, but I feel that what I have to say is more important to me (even if it is negative). Did you even think this out? Isn't a logical step that Maxy could easily make contact with the host and get his access back? Isn't it a logical step to assume you could be in some rather deep shit here? Seriously, this could have been done another way. I've always been a relatively friendly member towards you, Jacket. However, that does not change my feelings towards this act of insanity. Mark my words, this will tear the town apart.

AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA.
Wow, I love how you can take something as trivial as the progression of a forum/website so seriously that you would actually manipulate and then backstab someone in order to gain "power". You know who else rose to power through notorious and shady means? Emperor Palpatine.

Oh, also Hitler. And Stalin.

Anyhow, do you really think that yoiu're going to stay in "power" (*snort *chuckle*) for long? It's only a matter of time before Maxy (I guess, I really dont care for the town politics) will contact hisn host and get his access back, and you can see yourself in a lifetime banning. Though, if this is your state of affairs right now, I bet a banning will completely crush your tiny little world. Jesus.

This...is rather unexpected. I'm not the most common visitor, but I know for a fact that Jacket is a great member and wouldn't do anything for some pompous reason or for his own self-interests...but I DO think that this could've been done more...democratically.

If you and Magi were in on this together then why did you do..uh, whatever you did to him as well? I know you love the site Jacket, but even if this IS the fastest way to achieve things...it's not neccessarily the most stable, or the most guarenteed way of coming up with a positive result. I mean, I don't even know how PaulC and the other contributed to any amount of regression here.

While your intentions were good, I do believe the way you've worked towards accomplishing those intentions could have been done less hastily. If it's an issue of bringing the Town together, maybe you could explain how anyone was stopping that from happening. I mean, a simple topic could've gotten the point of across...right? I just have a bad feeling about this.

If the path to attaining something involves doing an action that is less honorable than that which your trying to accomplish, it often has a way of coming back on you.

SaW: I'm glad that you'll still like to help. That's one of the main things that I'm looking for to make this work in the long run is a more community-oriented working environment.

OSR and Matkau: Yes, I thought this through. This was not something I just up and decided to do. The deal with Maxy's host will not be a "problem" or result in me "getting crushed" or "lifetime banned" or any such thing. I will detail that, more, later.

DMC: I can sort of see why you may be concerned, but I assure you that I know what I'm doing. I'm not one to rush into something like this, and I know what sort of things could happen to a fool who was dumb enough to do so.

Why though Jacket? Why do this now? I don't understand. You suddenly tell everybody we've been no help and you take the reigns for yourself? I even defended YOU when Majin Paul criticized you for being untrustworthy. I'm trying to make myself believe you have good reason for this, but I just don't see why you had to be so secretive and snatch the reigns for yourself. I'm going to be sure to see what Maxy has to say about this.

I love how nearly all of you are "well, then, yes quite, yes, it would seem that this isn't the msot democratic thing at all, yes, quite, yes, saynomore saynomore."
The man (boy? mouse?) worked in secret with a collaborator, then literally STOLE someone's website from them ("But Matt, he didn't steal it from him!" He gained admisitrative control for himself, while denying it to the person who actually pays for the domain space. What do you call it?) in addition to screwing over his collaborator.
You do realize that's what you've done, right? You've gained control, but are you paying the bills? No. At this very point, you have taken away a person's services that they PAID FOR and continue paying for through illcit means, and then put said services right in your pocket. That is textbook thievery, robbery, larceny. It boggles my mind how none of you are grasping this fact.

Anyway, this is a brilliant coup and all, but it's doomed. I wouldn't be surprised if Maxy just said "Fuck this!" and dumped the whole space.

Matkau, I understand fully what you're saying. Under most circumstances, what you're saying would be accurate. What you must realize is that there are a few connections between myself and Maxy's space that have not been detailed to 99% of the Townies. This includes PaulC, Magi, and even Maxy's own brother, The-Inquisitor. I have every intention of detailing this soon. As I said, I want to be upfront with everything, and that includes letting people know about one or two things that have not exactly been out in the open since last year. I would not have put myself in the position to be the head administrator of the Town for a few moments, only to lose not only control but any membership at all - and then face possible criminal charges. As I will explain - by tomorrow night when I get off work at the latest - I am not in violation of any regulations and am certainly not in danger of any of the things you described in your post.

It is regrettable that you seem to be angry about this. I couldn't have, and do not expect that everybody would agree with me totally on how this was handled. What I do hope, is that within the coming days, everything can be explained so that people will fully understand why things were handled the way they were and why the Town/Palace will be like it will.

So, what, you backstabbed everyone else, and now intend to make everything alright by explaining how you did it? By telling us how it is for our own good? If this is some kind of joke, Jacket, I don't get it. Do you see yourself as some sort of protective father-figure in this? Because I don't. All I see is a mustachioed martinet.

I'm sorry, Jacket. I thought you were better than this. Right now all I'm hearing is, "I'm going to be upfront with you...later." You betray us all, then ask us to help you build your castle walls. I don't know. Maybe, for some people, that works. Personally, I'm not going to goose-step to your tune. Congratulations, Jacket. You've fucked the lot of us.

I have nothing more but the wise words of our friend PaulC.

------------------------------

Q. What?
A. From what I can gather, Jacket has orchestrated a rise to absolute internet forum power mainly in the interest of living out some abhorrent psycho-sexual fantasy of totalitarian domination, purging in a fit of righteousness all those who refuse to bend their knee and suckle at his loathsome teat, as it were, of progress.

Q. Huh?
A. Jacket is an utter assmunch.

Q. What's gunna happen?
A. Towards what glorious ends Jacket pictures himself leading his anticipated legions of devoted acolytes I cannot begin to fathom, but I gather it involves some sort of mystical rebirth, in which the RPG Palace dies amongst the crumbling ruins of failures past in a blaze of brilliant flame - only to emerge anew, resplendent, as a beautiful internet butterfly, beloved by all and a-glimmering with incandescent light.

Q. Lol whut
A. Nothing will actually happen.

Q. I am angry! I am hurt!
A. The world will continue its rotations regardless of your fury, and your tears will vanish unseen into the uncaring stones. You are weak. The new regime has no place for you.

So TheJacket has become the dictator of the RPGPalace and RPGTown? Why? I understand the reasoning, but it's still just wrong. Why couldn't you just ask first? I wonder what your plans are. As you can see, PaulC is very unhappy. I hope this won't push RPGTown into a chaos. For example, townies rebelling, spamming and other things like that. My loyalities lie on Town and Palace, not on any person. But this situation is a bit funny, too. Just after you have seen the new Star Wars movie, you decide to take over the Palace and the Town. But, I am willing to help the Town and Palace in any way I can. So at least for now I'm on your side, if your intentions really are to make Town and Palace better.

Has anyone thought what this might mean for the Palace? If Maxy realises and is pissed off we might lose the owner, Jacket might be banned in Maxy's last act, meaning two good members have left and the palace itself gone.

And now why the hell can Jakey put music in his thread?!?

Jacket, you know I've always stuck by you in everything to do with the Palace and Town but... I can see why you wanted to do this... but the method was completely wrong. A meeting of staff, mods and admins would have done better - now the town is in danger of not only loosing its domain but also of loosing members - members that are scarce at the moment but are, or were, increasing.

[post=172285]Quoted post[/post]

Those are the two posts I picked out as being the ones which basically some up how much of a prat you are. They also appear to be the posts that you've overlooked/not been able to come up with a reply to.

'I felt that the Palace was going nowhere, so I decided to covertly promote myself to a means by which I could demote everybody else' is, as is arguably becoming unnecessary to say, although in reality it needs re-enforcing again and again, akin to a dictatorial and indeed bloody stupid method of reasoning.

Have you checked the site as of recent? Or indeed kept in contact with the other owners of the Palace. Progress is not at a dead stop, as you seem happy to stress: the site was being built upon and improved gradually; the implementation of the option for comments in the resources pages is an example of this. Hell, even I've just written a little review for it. Maxy has been very busy as of recent with University exams, although those I'm told are now out of the way, and his focus now turns to working on the RPG Palace. Let's face it, if you have a look at the updates on the main page, then Maxy's 6 entries against Magi's 3 against your 2 doesn't seem to reflect this picture of you being the potential ring-leader of affairs on-site. When you consider that your two entries on the page actually have nothing to do with submissions to the Palace (although I can quote "I guess that my main job now is forum oriented." from your first), this picture rings even less true. The reason why things seem to be going slow is because there are less submissions than we'd like, and that we aren't attracting enough people. There are sensible solutions to both, although pissing off most of the Palace's loyal audience (and its runners who were doing a good job in recent months) isn't what personally I would call "I would like to broaden it's horizons and make it a better site.". Please note that there is no apostrophe in "it's" used in that context, either.

Secondly, who's actually paying for this domain? I was under the impression that people like Maxy were. I presume after this unlawful usurpation of power that if you're serious about running things on your own then you'd change the fiscal details to yourself. Even if this is meant to be only temporary (and if you have any sense this temporary period should end the next time you log on). Of course you understand that what you would be doing is indeed that very Christian act of stealing.

To be honest, in recent times my respect for you has certainly been dwindling, but this just takes the proverbial. I do hope that you're joking, and that things will be restored to how they were as soon as possible, and that I've wasted my time typing all this out. "People who have nothing but negativity on their minds will not be permitted to help us along, and will be suspended. I hate removing permission to forum use, but priviledges will be removed from those who do not wish to help build on the board." Please note that there is no 'd' in 'privilege'. Subsitute negativity for the simplest of logic, and that's where we're at now. If things are as they say you are, and you don't see it fit to restore site administrative powers to those that paid for them (and those that were actually using them), then I see no other option myself but to boycott this place until things are returned to as they are. I can't fathom the prospect of you being able to control the responsibility you've unlawfully and forcefully placed upon yourself.

I'm more than a little irate, but nothing here will be solved with words. I have contacted my host, I should have control again by the time their working hours start. I am most disappointed with this situation, but I could do nothing to stop it, it seems. Jacket will be an unfortunate casuality in this, as actions on this level can warrant nothing less than demotion, deletion and IP banning. I'll keep the Town informed of this process.

Well, really, I don't know what to say. Along with the fact everything needed to be said already has been. So, I guess all I'll say is, goodbye Jacket.

GG Maxy.

By the way, I had no idea you had fiscal responsibilties for the Palace. I would like to thank you for assuming that responsibility, as I'm sure many of the people of this community would more than likely not want to assume this role.

Thanks Maxy, Magi, PaulC, everyone who has led the town over the years. Especially Kamau, Magi and Paul, whom I've known for around 4 years, when I first signed up in January of 01. You guys have always done a great job since the town opened. (even though Magi was the original spammer. Sticking Out Tongue)

Thanks again, Maxy Paul and Magi. I really appreciate the work you guys do for us.

Now you look back, it does seem unusual that none would have noticed a new admin account
