Contests?

I've never been one for an epic post, so I'll just be straight up here...

Things that would be necessary to get this to happen...

  1. Admin's will. (Duh. XD)
  2. A good number of people to participate (say 4 or 5?) and an even greater number to vote. (That's going to be a problem according to recent forum activity.)
  3. A trophy of a sort to show that the winner has accomplished something. Say, a badge? Something nifty besides a bunch of happy book badges. Laugh (A badge design wouldn't be hard for any of us to create, really.)
  4. Someone to oversee the contest. (Which could be anyone if the directions are followed through properly. But preferably someone trustable...)
  5. A purpose for the contest.(that resource gallery is looking pretty empty, isn't it?)

How might this work...

I fail at descriptions. Lemme give it a shot here. I should probably demonstrate...but then I might go off track.

Let's say that one day I decide to take out my insanity on the town and create a contest on who could make the best tileset. (Not recommended however; tilesets take a helluva lotta time to make...)

  • I would then post a topic for such a thing. Something along the lines of "Recruitment for rm2k3 tileset contest of March 2011". I would keep the signup going for a week...
    • At the end of the signup, you should post the participants in the first post, and close signups.
    • You should post any rules and restrictions necessary in the post.
    • You should mostly make it clear about how much time the people in the contest have to create the specified resource. You might wanna also mention the reward...if there is one. Laugh
    • If 3 or more people signed up by the deadline, I could then get the contest going. Anything less would be...more like a duel with another or oneself.
  • Afterwards, the contest is on behind-the-scenes. ALL SUBMISSIONS should be pmed to the overseer to keep it private.
    • If everyone ends up submitting their works before the deadline, and if the overseer wishes it so, the overseer can pm all of the participants asking if they wish to skip directly to the voting part of the contest, as all submissions have been collected. All participants MUST AGREE to skip to the voting part of the contest...it would be unfair if someone wanted to make a change to their submission all of a sudden.
    • If someone is unable to submit their work on-time, they will be out of the contest. Sorry, but life doesn't slow down for anyone. (INCLUDING ME. >:( )
  • Alright. Now the voting portion. Since you cannot post a poll and content inside it at the same time, you will have to create the poll, and post directly afterwards with the content. (There's a flaw to this contest idea now...)
    • The overseer must take caution to keep the choices as censored as possible. Don't reveal who made what. The participants should not be allowed to post within the voting topic until the voting is over. They can vote however, but it's pretty obvious who they will vote for, so it kinda evens out.
    • The voting options should be labeled as...
      • Submission 1
      • Submission 2
      • Submission 3
      • etc...
    • The submissions should be shown in the post directly below as...
      • Submission 1
      • *Submission 1's content*
      • Submission 2
      • *Submission 2's content*
      • Submission 3
      • *Submission 3's content*
      • etc...
  • After 1 week, the poll should automatically close, as you probably took the time to notice that nifty poll time-out option when creating the poll....right? Laugh
    • Announce the winner. Give that person a chicken dinner.
    • If there was a reward, the winner should either wear it proudly or throw the acheievement in the trash. Whatever works for them.

It's very possible that I missed something important in all that...describing.

How this could benefit the forum...

  • More forum activity due to conflicts and motivation gained from contest activity.
  • The badges(or whatever the reward should be...) gained from such contests can benefit individuals...but thinking about that, this wouldn't help the entire forum.
  • More stuff in the resource gallery can be gained off of the resulting works in a contest...that is...if the creators of the resources can agree to share.

How this could harm the forum...

  • Work would have to be done. Nobody likes work. But everybody likes mudkips.
  • The opposite of all the above in benefits could be true.

I know I'm gonna get a tldr; here... and honestly, I agree with whoever posts that.

Sounds fun, it would actually be pretty cool to have a badge making competition, and the winner of that gets to wear the badge Sticking Out Tongue (Though, I don't think meu want's to fill up the resource galley with badges, maybe they would work as icons...?)

This sounds like a good idea. I can give people badges next to their books. I would suggest making an image 160px wide, possibly 16 or 32 pixels tall. Any other dimensions, and I'd suggest putting them in signatures instead.

Be wary though, that contests here and on other RM forums typically don't get as much activity as one would like. As a meta-community we are bad at making deadlines.

Hmm I'd give this a shot....

do paint-only-made HUD's count?  I'm good on HUD's

or I'd enter my script-less swimming system

The project still lives!

I would suggest creating the contest as a group. It's more flexible and it gives you a way to group things.

You mean deciding what the contest will be as a group (eg. making an animation) or working together in groups to particpate in said contest?

I mean to make a group in which contest stuff - registration, submissions, and judging - will be posted.
