Telekinesis

Hey, well, I've decided I would try and make a game that is at least half-decent, it will be based mainly around some guy who has telekinesis abilities who must save the world of something.
Now, I'm not sure if I can, or am even allowed, but if so, I somehow copy right this Sticking Out Tongue


Story (likely to be changed with updates)

Anyway, in this lab, a bunch of scientists have been testing genetics and cloning on the humans, to make them stronger, more intelligent, to fly, and impossible ablitlites, like telekinesis. The player progresses through the tests well at first, as all of them do. He begins the game with no knowledge of how he got there, how he can move stuff with his mind, or even why he obeys the voice coming from inside his head, that tells him to complete the challenges in front of him. So the player finishes these increasingly difficult challenges, and something happens (I don't know what yet) and the guy manages to escape, after meeting up with another group of escaped humans, all equally as 'special' as him. The metal device that was lodged in his brain was removed, and it was explained the this was the 'voice' the told him to complete the challenges, just a remote that the scientists used to keep the humans on the test. He lives in the outside world for sometime, doing tasks and whatnot, till he eventually sets his mind on finding out what actually happens within the lab, so he ventures in. He finds the genetics area of the lab, and watches the scientists treat the clones and test subjects like cattle, so he goes and sets a bunch of them free, and then breaks into the main genetics part of the lab, and stabs himself (or is injected, or falls on the injection) with a highly new experimental gene fulled concoction that gives him pyrokinesis. He robs the place of it information, (stealing it of the computers) and learns how to make more concoctions of other telekinesai abilities (hydrokinesis, pyrokinesis, etc.) so then he travels the world does a bunch of stuff, and tracks down the main men who started the operation, and kills them.

Controls

So far the only controls necessary are the mouse and arrow keys.
You click first on the object you wish to telekinesise (turns out there's not an actual verb for using telekinesis Undecided ), the mouse should turn into a box with an down arrow, then click on an area with a green box and the object will move there.
You can also click on the player, then on the ground and you can move there.

sure why not. I mean at least you have the plot all figured out, that's a good start

Hmm, I don't really plan on making a sim-ish game, I was thinking that perhaps he has an enemie (who plans to kill him while he's vunerable in his weak, puny human form) who sends alien cretures to kill him... to make the game more violent, and once he's beaten them, he can choose to kill them, or use some random telekinesis power, where he sends there minds back out to their home planet or something, thus getting good or bad points. But there will have to be SOME socialising...

EDIT: also this main enemie will probably end up been the final boss...

I totally know how the alien lost it's memory. I accidentally fell out of a tree and landed on it, then left it in the hospital.

Sounds like it'd be fun, otherwise. Laugh I'd get the "BLOW IT UP!" ending every time, but...hey, would be fun either way.

So here is what I've come into this thread today to say:

I need help with telekinesis movement...
Some objects get pushed by the pulsing purple dot and the flame graphic does not want to co-operate at all Frown
I thought I might be able to fix it myself but, alas, I am not very talented... Frown

My objectives:

  • [s]when shift is pressed telekinesis purple pulsing dot comes out of player. Check
  • when pulsing purple dot is on top of an object, object follows pulsing purple dot. Check
  • when S is pressed over an object, object moves in a random direction. Check
  • when A is pressed over an object, you use the corresponding -kinesis power (mainly pyrokinesis in this demo and object sets on fire (or turns to ash if object is plastic)). Check
  • when W is pressed you use self teleportation and teleport to that spot. Check
  • when D is pressed, objects don't move along with pulsing purple dot. Check
  • objects won't get pushed by the pulsing purple dot and will move smoothly along ith it. YER RIGHT!
  • the fire graphic on top of wooden objects (wooden chairs in my game) moves smoothly with the chair and won't randomly move off the chair for no reason. Don't make me laugh.
  • So for a noob this game is actually pretty good (by my standards, anyway)

    Here is the demo(not actually the demo cos'I haven't made that, just a demo so you guys can help me Laugh ), controls are explained in the beginning... BTW it's only three maps, that third one, called room, don't bother going in there...

    IF YOU DOWNLOAD go into data, go into common events go into common event "004 -kinesis' leveling up" and change the first conditional branch (variable 12 telekinesis used = 10) constant from 10 to 1000!!!

    It's not an actual demo, it's just the beginnings of a demo, so it has no plot, intro or anything vitally imporatant. There is however a miniture min-game through the door...)

    So plz download and tell me what I can do to make it smaller and less terrible...

    Not sure how to get all that to work...otherwise I'd help. I'm not gonna have a push/pull system for my game. Jumping, yes. Swimming, no.

    Swimming + heavy armor + heavy equipment + tent in backpack = SINKS LIKE STONE. That's what confuses me about LoZ...how can Link swim when he's CARRYING ALL THAT CRAP!?

    I think the problem with a lot of plots that people propose, RPG Maker plots or indeed any other type of plot, is that they haven't got that 'hook' to pull you in; your game needs to do something that makes it something more than 'just another RPG'. I don't think that means you have to have a completely original idea, but it has to be an attractive and functional concept to have any chance of interesting people. Especially if you have an attention span like mine.

    Good news is I think you have it! Your basic plot outline is bugging me because it seems extremely reminiscent of some movie/book/something that I've come in contact with and I can't work out what, but it's a solid idea and the idea of having kinetic powers makes a lot of sense from a gameplay perspective. I think having these powers would provide ample opportunity for some really entertaining puzzles, which looking at your control system outline below (I haven't downloaded your demo yet) seems to be the way you're going with the idea.

    I do like your morality idea too, though I'm not sure about how you're going to implement it. I do wonder about the 'good' ending being aliens sharing all their technology with us...I'm sure Starfleet Command would have something to say on that matter! (N.B. I should get a life.)

    He did have Iron Boots in Ocarina of Time, which made him sink. Though when you think about it, when he wasn't wearing them he was fine...it's not very logical, is it?

    Mmm. Starfleet...

    If Link were carrying the boots or they were in his bag of stuff, he should have sunk. Like a stone. Unless he filled them with balloons of some sort to offset the weight somehow.

    Also, Zim from Invader Zim smokes and melts when hit by moisture of most kinds. Generally water-based things. Although...he did start to smoke when Tak hit him with a slab of meat...

    Update, well kinda...

    -kinesis's... (that sounds terrible...)
    First is there main effect on objects and people, second is what they SHOULD look like on field. I plan to use Blizzabs but it might not be as compatible as i'd like. NOTE: all these (with the exception of teleport and chronokinesis) can be leveled up to lvl 10, you get points from when you normally level, which can be spent on 1 of the kinesis.
    These are the only skills in the game, and it's only one playable character at a time, all battle will be on the map, and until you level up your kinesis's to do better damage, you'll be using telekinesis, to through chairs at enemies Laugh

    • Pyrokinesis - Sets objects (and people) on fire, also removes ice - Shoots fire
    • Electrokinesis - may be able control robots, computers, magnets or something - Shoots lightning
    • Hydrokinesis - Puts out fire... that's about as much as I can gather for the moment... - sprays water
    • Cryokinesis - Can freeze water and people - shoots little cloud of ice or something
    • Aerokinesis - ... I can't really think of anything - looks like wind
    • Botanokinesis - can make plants grow, or un-grow... - How should this look?
    • Geokinesis - I also can't really think of anything that this can do - nor what to look like
    • Magnekinesis - Metal... umm... - should look like..?
    • Chronokinesis - further in the game, you can HOPEFULLY find one or two of these time crystal things, (I know that's cliched but they're from your homeplanet) that react with your chronokinesis skill, which you can use to travell back or forward in time, depending on the crystal, and there will be a correspoding crystal in that time zone - a bright white light after you time travell
    • Self teleporation - teleports you anywhere you little telekinesis ball is (omg, that sounds wrong, just to clarify, it will not teleport you into your pants... :lol3:) - Just the basic magic skill picture

    there you go... by the way, I have done none of that, it's just to get an idea (mainly for me) of what I have to do, I can't go any further, until EGG HAS UPLOAD THE GAME HE FIXED!!! Angry plz, egg, honestly, hurry up... Frown
    I have however done the slef teleportation, because that's really easy... Laugh

    The stuff in italics I have no idea what to do with, so you guys can help me Laugh and if you think something is wrong, or doesn't make sense, plz feel free to tell me what it should be like Wink

    Geokinesis would be the ability to shape the earth with your mind. for example you could have it so it the screen rumbles then he can cause an earthquake or a tsunami if he is next to the beach or an rockslide if he is next to a mountain. he could also do stuff like making it so plants die or grow.

    Well this is an updatey thing.
    It's actually amazing how many bumps and updates you can do without touching the game!

    Okay, I'm gonna update/redo the controlls, because they're not very convenent at the moment.
    SHIFT: I really shouldn't have to tell you after all this...
    Q: Okay, the idea is, when you have learnt at least two kinesai (new word, kinesis's is too hard to say...) you can scroll throw them using Q and W, with the skill at the top left next to the health (hopefully). Q scrolls it left.
    W: W, scrolls right.
    A: this lucky thing has TWO jobs. Well, mainly one... is this hurting your brain? Good. When the kinesai ball is out, press this beauty button to use the kinesis that you've selected. When shift is NOT pressed, it will shoot out the corresponding kinesai two squares in front (or maybe as long as the map, meh doesn't really matter). For example, if electrokinesis is selected, it will shoot out a lightning bolt two squares in front; geokinesis, a rock... etc.
    S: When the kinesai ball is hovered over stuff, you press this, and it'll move each of the objects in a random direction. Too stop objects from overlaping eachother.
    Oh Noes! You can move the ball over objects, and they will not move with it.

    OMG: NOT FAIR!
    I might also make some more kinesai you can get by doing sidequests.

    Well now I'm gonna post up, a gameplay demo...
    *Pause for oohhhh....'s*
    Well, as in the last one, theer's no plot, nuttin' to collect, just have fun smashing windows and killing animals by levitating stuff with you mind! Laugh

    I'm also going to have to warn you, if you decide to be controlling all the chairs and what not,the game will slow right down, I'm trying to put a stop to this by only been able to levitate 3 objects at a time, but I suppose it's believable, it would be harder to move all the objects, thus making it slower right?
    But if you've got any ideas to fix that, PLZ TELL ME!
    I would prefer if you didn't hit the animals with chairs and cushions, but, well you can see what happens...

    If you are a lover of cats and dogs, do not attack them with a cushion or chair 3 times.

    Seeing the funny uses of telekinesis already in 10 seconds tells me that this is going to be one heck of a game. :cool:

    Thanks Rav!

    Anyway guys, I'm going to put up a new gameply demo tomorow or the day after, sooner than expected believe me! I've been making huge progress on this project and I'm sooo happy with Egg because he fixed the problem with gravity (inside joke, lol, don't worry), so it will be a mass onslaught of awesomeness as soon as I can get the health and mana bars animated properly (he he). So yeah! Something there's you can look forward to in the weekend!!! Laugh

    And believe it will be the most awesome thing you have played in your life. Now the baddies can attack you, AND you can attack them without throwing chairs, by using the othe telekinesai powers you've got!
    But wait, there's more! (lol, soz I had to say that) You can upgrade your telekinesai powers everytime you level up, by using the tablet in your inventry that some how magically appeared in there, AND the telekinesai powers do more damage the higher the level!!! All in a very small downloading amount!!!

    Laugh OMG YOUR SOO HAPPY RIGHT NOW AREN'T YOU!!! Laugh

    OKAY!
    Time for another demo! Laugh
    Here's the latest demo (I'll also throw it up on the first page), this has all the basic gameplay ideas, and even a little boss fight with the water and ice spirit peoples.
    It's got the awesome hud in the top left, and Yami's time thingy in the top right, and the fairy in the field, attacks at night time, and heals you during the day! Gasp Big
    Unfortunetly, I haven't got the the animals and whatnot attacking YOU sorted out, if you hold shift, they'll just run at the purple ball thing... Frown But I'll fix that somehow in the next one Wink
    The controls are up on the first page, because there's no tutorial in game yet :Eyesroll:
    What cha' got to do in that one, is try and get the 6 kinesai from the gods/spirits by doing whatever they want you to do or killing them.

    Scroll over over one of the pebble/sand bits on the ground (with the purple ball) and press A with geokinesis a few times. It will turn into a grey rock, put that rock on the hole at the top of the grasss area. Do the same with the other rocks and untill you've got the big rock, put that onto the grey tile next to the rock guy and then talk to him.

    Now, I haven't managed to get all of the kinesai in this demo, (There's 3 missing, vitakinesis, pyro~, and Magne~) and they were left out for no better reason than I can't be bothered putting them in because I'm tired Sticking Out Tongue
    Tell me any bugs/flaws, blah blah...
    Oh and I know about the one when fighting the water and ice spirits. Don't press S or D, you'll screw it up Sticking Out Tongue I'll fix it by next proper demo.
    Oh, before I forget, If you wana be in my game as one of the other spirits/gods/whatever, you have to be a regular townie, tell me which kinesai, and what you wana look like or provide a sprite AND ASK! (i won't put you in if you don't ask Sticking Out Tongue )

    Bumped because it's no longer on the 30 day project list.
    Anyways, my creative juices having been flowing (I hope it's creative juices anyway Lips are Sealed ), I've been editing up the events to make things smoother and got a nice new script to put in place, so that you still get attacked when holding shift, instead of the silly old "follow player" command, which would have monsters chasing after the telekinesis ball instead of attack, lol.
    So yeah, more pics and editing to make plot better, so check out the first post!

    (by editing plot, I mean REALLY editing plot, no more telekinesis, alien orphan; now humans as experiments! Laugh

    Just a heads up, I'm redoing the whole elemental/ ~kinesai attack system, and it'll probably take me a while.
    Hopefully THIS will answer any future questions about how much damage the elemental system does.

    Okay, that actually probably hurts your brain, rather than help it understand, :lol3:

    Anyway, as you can (perhaps not so) clearly see, there are 8 elements, pretty standard in most games.

    Pyro (fire) beats aero (wind)
    aero (wind) beats hydro (water)
    hydro (water) beats geo (earth)
    and geo (earth) beats pyro (fire)

    Geo vs Aero, and Hydro vs pyro, do normal damage

    Attacking a wind monster with pyrokinesis (fire) does 3 times as much damage as, say attacking it with geokinesis (earth).

    I'm complicating this, aren't I?
    Lets take Electro. If you use electrokinesis on a:
    * Botano (nature) monster will do 3 times as much damage
    * Aero (wind) monster will do 2 times as much damage
    * Pyro/hydro/cryo/normal monster will do average damage
    * Geo (earth) monster will do half as much damage
    * Magne (metal) monster will do nothing
    * another electro (thunder) monster will heal it

    *pants*

    If you think that's hard to understand, I have to event it. Frown
    You probably won't need to think to much about that too much when playing though, it'll probably become second nature. -_-
    Anyway, it's just like all those pokemon games, without all the stupid ones like light, dark, physic, dragon (wtf were they thinking?) and fighting.
    I'm also making it so when you press [a], the telekinesis ball will change into the chosen kinesai ball.

    So yeah, massive overhaul on the eventing side of it, so it might take some time to get a FULL gameplay demo up.
    And from now on, I'm probably not going to be able to ask egg_dragon for help, unless he want's to become a full fledged member of the project, because the events are too large and overlapping for someone who isn't part of the project to get a grip on the ever-changing system.

    gah, I'm probably going to throw myself of a bridge trying to finish this project Frown

    Oh, I've also updated the hud, so it's nice and pretty, and also shows you which kinesai are before and after the kinesai chosen at the moment.

    Ahh, hello again my loyal followers ahh... friends err... internet buddies hmm... random people.

    I thought I'd just come and update this a little, with this little statement

    now, the game is no longer going to have the extra kinesai / elemental system, and the game will have ONLY the telekinesis ability. (you know move stuff without touching it). So, in place of the kinesai abilities, and stuff, I will put alot more emphasis on logic ("Oh god" I hear you say), and as such, will have plenty of new and old gameplay elements you may or may not have seen. The player will also be able to collect items, and store them for later use, for example, a small red rubber ball, which you can throw to dogs to keep them, and yourself occupiued for a little bit, and will also stop the ravenous, rabbies-infected dog from eating you to pieces. Another example would be bombs (ZELDA!!!!) which you drop, and then telekinesasise (?) and throw at enemies or small cats.

    Now, this is actually my first game, believe it or not, so don't complain about no demo at the moment, or the games general direction changing, because I will get Rav to impale you with his chainsaw ( Sticking Out Tongue ).

    Well, after that giant wall of text, I'm feeling better, and in other news, I fixed another glitch with gravity that Egg didn't see ( :No: ), and have got little springs that can bounce the player and objects around (I stole it of another game...).

    The adorable little hud in the top left will no longer show which kinesai you've selected, but rather store the usable items (bombs, and balls). And, I'm ditching Yami's amazing Day and night, and whatnot system, (SORRY!!! Frown ) because it made things more complicated than they needed to be. Oh yeah, by ditching the kinesai and day/night system, it'll make gameplay alot easier, and I can slowly draw the player into harded logic/puzzle problems in game.

    I thought Fire beats Earth, Wind beats Fire lol... actually if its a large fire probably not Confused . Anyway since its out of the game its O.K...

    Don't worry Karl, I know how deadly Rav's chainsaw is ( 9999+ Spambot Kills ) :lol3:

    First projects are like that they always change, get new ideas, loose old ones e.t.c Its good not to over do it for the first project, you can always improve it once you have the basic game down and add all the custom features to your developer hearts content. I'm sure egg will be great help, he helped me a bunch with my first game too ( although I lost it Frown ) just don't jump a cliff if its not perfect we'll miss you more than your project Smile .

    No stress with the demo or anything, you can show us when you feel like.

    ^ Good advice actually, I should [i]really[/i] listen to that, but as soon as I figured out a way to get a mouse control script mix in with a path finding one, I couldn't resist, so I'm redong the project (yay, 4th time), to have mouse control... Hopefully this time should eventually become the final product, but we'll see...

    One thing you should not comment on, is why the hell companion cube is in there. (I felt sorry for him being so alone... that and the guilt trip of burning him alive, hearing his screams of pain, and doing nothing about it.)
