A Day in our life.

ok this is a project I've been working since my noob days on rpg maker XP
If you download this please do not be offended by the low quality of the demo as this was one of
my first attempts. the reason I post this is because I want to encourage other person to keep on working on
their projects no matter how dull they may seem

description: you take control of a troubled teen who in a time paradox is swept to an alternate dimension
ruled out by what seems to be the alter ego of the high school's principal.

ok so I know it doesnt sound like much (even clicheed.) but this got me an A+ on my final school project

I also included another small project. a swimming system without any scripts required.

the demo can be found in here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=329XXP85

UPDATE!!: NOW DEMO #3 IS UP,

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NWSKTO65

If you compare it to demo 1 you can clearly see quite some differences, enjoy!

FAQ's (most of these were from my schoolmates)

Q: How long is the demo?
A: About 10 minutes long

Q: I see it says part 1.....
A: Yes in total there will be parts 1, 2a, 2b, & 3

Q: 2a?
A: You get to play that part from diferent points of view

Q: when I go back a room the boss respawns.
A: My bad. (at that time I didn't know how to ues switches.)

Q: Is the dev room accesible?
A: For this demo YES

Q: There's a town in white wtf?
A: Again my bad....

Q: I can walk on a roof!
A: Um.... next question please.....

Q: Does the game have a complex battle system?
A: No. I want to stick with the original rpgxp battle system

Q: Ok so what do I do after 2nd town visit?
A: Go south. and board the minecart

Q: How can I exit the dev room?
A: Either watching an ending or dying.

..... and that's about it

oh and for people who liked this demo (if any):

1- yes I AM remaking the whole thing up without any mistakes

2- I'll put my whole effort to make it feature lenghed. per part

3- If you want to join this project PM me (yes we're low on personnel)

4- If you wanna discuss the plot PM me too. (still pending)

anyways have fun.

Downloading it now.

BTW, I like the first ad on the download page...two hot girlies in bikinies...YEOW!

UPDATE: It's a good game, at least what I've played so far, for having started in back in your "noob days" Wink I think the opening is too similar to Chrono Trigger, though. I do like that the enemies were somewhat challenging. I expected them to be like the Imps in FFIV (they had something like 5 HP) so I went into the fights just pressing 'enter' the whole time. Suddenly I was dead lol.

I also like the player movement, how it's not restricted to 4 directions and doesn't snap to the traditional 32x32 grid. Very nice Smile I'm assuming you are using someone else's script to do that? Because I would like to know so I can use it Laugh Unless that's your script, in which case I am very impressed!

Anyway, clean up the maps a little bit and change the opening so it's not so Chrono-ish and you've got something pretty good there! Keep at it!

Thanks for trying it out.

I can send you the script on PM.

As for the mapping. well like I said the whole game is gonna be remade FEATURE LENGHED!

including some sidequests.

the swimming system (YAY! scriptless!) if useful will be added next time. hopefully soon

FUN FACT: The high school on the game is REAL it's called Lazaro Cardenas. and yes the teachers
can and mostly will make your life miserable.

oh you may also notice. that there are almost no scripts inserted... (besides the 8 moves & run) my goal
is to make an game that's entertaining and simple at the same time

enjoy!

Hey guys. here's an update.

encounters have been changed so you either get them random or get them pokemon style
(guy spots you. comes at you. then fights you.)

the battle transition has now broken glass sfx

battle themes change as the player reaches certain world maps.

respawns have been eliminated. so has the infinite cash glitch.

limit breaks still need twitching. (if anyone knows how to do these without scripting pleas PM me)
oh and are only available on boss battles

bosses have introduction sequences.... kinda like mmx

the whole introduction sequence has been altered. now the game starts one day before any events on my first demo.

Screenshots & demo coming soon!

btw: since this is a new game. shouldn't this appear on the new game section on the main page?
(not that this actually matters... just a thought I had..... thanks)

if someone has anything that would improve the A.D.I.O.L project please PM me or start a topic.

ah... sorry for double posting. thanks

I enjoyed it, though admittedly I haven't played many games made by other people (except for commercial games) so I don't have much basis for comparison when it comes to "amateur" RPG's. I am interested in playing your new demo when it's ready.

Alright after quite some time I have managed to re-do the whole intro without
the very annoying noob errors

here it is: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=K1S0FND9

note: gameplay is the same. however I'll point some things out.

1# there are no random encounters in this demo (to avoid powerleveling)
just the essential fights

2# this demo isn't as extensive as the first one. it's more of a filler for the plot

3# the limit system was removed (Needs urgent workout)

4# so has the darkness on the dungeon (still can't figure it out quite) and
dev room is unaccesible (if you wanna see it THAT badly I recommend trying
out the previous demo I uploaded.)

Besides that everything is good to go. Have fun!

oh and any secondary plot suggestions are open to public. just as long as it stays near the main plot.

I'm going to download it right after I eat dinner, but I probably won't get a chance to play it until tomorrow. BTW, the "darkness on the dungeon" you mentioned, is that the "lantern effect"? If you want, I can write up the events for you so you can just plop them into your game.

Good luck with your tests! Remember to eat fruit that morning! Get plenty of sleep! No caffeine before the tests! Bring enough sharpened #2 pencils! Don't study too hard the night before. Cramming is bad. Bring enough scratch paper to work out those long math problems. Bring an extra eraser in case your pencils wear down. Bring a calculator. Go to the bathroom BEFORE the test. Um...gosh I've been out of school so long those are the only bits of teacher advice I can remember.

UPDATE: I just played through your latest demo. That's some kick ass music you got in there Laugh Now I'm curious why his sister doesn't remember anything about the meteorite...hmm...and all I could think about everytime I saw "Dr. Pepper" in the game was Forrest Gump. "I must've had me about fifteen Doctuh Peppuhs..." "I gotta pee"

Alright everyyone!! my test season is over. the plot for part 1 has been set.

now I oficially declare the A.D.I.O.L project back in work.

ok so first order of business:

I need a mapper. anyone who can make a good dungeon. (or world map for the matter) is welcome
as you can see my game lacks rather large exiting maps. so yeah eventually
a mapper is needed.
(credit shall be given)

soundtrack: from medieval to upbeat. anything goes. (if interested)

plot: already been settled, but places & landmarks still lack names. (i'm too lazy XD)

spritage: need enemy sprites. from medieval to modern machinery will do.

anyone who can help out is more that welcome.

here's hoping I can actually finish the whole damn part 1.

don't sweat it. most of this is being taken care of by me or my "crew" near my home. this is rather
for people who'd like to suggest adding stuff.

oops forgot to add a little detail... reaction commands have been added. (simple ones for event triggers, soon RE4 type)

I'll upload the next demo as soon as it's done.

UPDATE:

Due to ANOTHER wave of incoming exams I have declared the project oh "hold" status
don't sweat it it's only gonna be for like 2 weeks tops.

a few notes:

TO ALL CAMEO MEMBERS: Ok I kinda lost track of which member goes where and such.
so if you would, please send me a PM with your sprite (your FINAL sprite, not rough drafts.) and dialouge.
last week to do so....

TO ANYONE INTERESTED:
I need a mapper for the world map, as for tilesets i'm using the ones provided from this site
well as E.D somewhat described, I suck at mapping and well... I was aiming at a good world map
(note: I'll scan and upload a draft I made on my notebook for the world map later on)

SOUNDTRACK OPINIONS ARE NOW "CLOSED"

PLOT IS STILL IN DEBATE (and semi good conditions to alter some quests)

oh btw....
Once I re-obtain the cameo sprites I'll re-upload my first demo with an update on the dev room
having the cameos in and an extra non-existant bossfight.

Later on I'll also start a topic poll of what would people like to include on the empty dev room floor.

besides that (and if I manage to obtain a world map) in like 2 weeks the project will be on the go again.

see you guys later.

"R.V.S"

so it's time to get serious, project A.D.I.O.L is NOT dead.

let's hope the next thing I post is the complete part 1 with hopefully 5-6 hours of
consecutive gameplay (if you know where to go and stuff)

(and for newcomers)
ok so, as you wait for part1 you can check the 2 demos from part1

for chronological order try demo 2 then demo 1

well see ya soon.

I can help with plot, but don't expect me to play the game. I can't fit a playthrough in my schedule, but plot is seperate from the game, no? I'm rather good with making up names, just describe the place, character, or what-not and'll try to find a name that suits it rather well.

and good news! before the week is over a new demo is coming up

in techincal speaking the demo covers up 50% of part 1 (out of possible 4)

and since you guys helped out a lot i'd like to see if you'd like to test out the demo once
it comes out....

who knows maybe I spark some new interest in supporting the project.... thanks.

(oh by the way mew... if you're reading this once the demo is out can you tell me how to add it
to the rpg palace game list?)

It seems the latest demo got a huge flaw on the burnibg forest part, and for that reason
I'm gonna have to cut the demo a bit short, so right now the demo I'll upload will
have a grand total of 30% of part 1 on it.

with better graphics, no noob-ish errors, better intros,

hopefully this sparks interest on people, as said before.

like I promised before this week is over, the demo shall be released.

hang in there guys!

I spotted this yesterday, but I haven't had time to play it yet (because I'm a lazy so and so). I shall play it very shortly and give you an opinion!

You can upload it to the main site yourself: at the bottom of each downloads page there is a link to 'Submit Your Download' (this is a direct link to submit an RMXP Game), where you can upload the game itself, submit up to 5 screenshots of the game and provide both a quicksummary and a more leisurely description of what your game is about.

You make a good point about reviewing - I was going to make a thread enquiring about reviving the Reviews page, which has been down for a while now (I've been trying to gather together all the reviews I've written, and I can't find the original files for the ones I submitted to this era of the RPG Palace alas!) so I'm quite keen to get it back on its feet. I can't remember whether there was a disclaimer on the Reviews page about the minimum requirements of a game in order to be eligible for a review (we tended to hunt out the games ourselves), though we asked that a demo had to have at least 30-45 minutes of gameplay, so that there was enough content to reach a fair decision, and/or gain a sense of what the rest of the game would be like. I'll keep you posted.

I'm probably being dense, but I got stuck quite early on! Sesilou is walking along the stone path and mentions something about construction vehicles, and after that I can't seem to move him at all - I can access the menu but that's it!

Really? odd....

ah, I believe I forgot to remove that issue. you see at the beginning (after sesilou get's the wooden sword)
yoy walk out of the park, triggering a conversation while walking. well I accidentaly forgot to remove the walking
thing after you switch screes (the one with the paved streets)

but you can do the following to avoid this issue:

wait until sesilou finishes walking (while still being at the park. THEN you listen to the conversations)
after the conversation you should appear outside the park being able to move.

besides that minor flaw, everything should be smooth as silk.

I have tried this 4 times now, but I still can't

can someone else upload it there? or I'm the only one that can?
because my PC is kinda slow right now,

by the way if the problem persists, tell me and I'll send a save state straight after the glitchy part.
(which shouldn't skip THAT much of a missed part of the demo,)

I waited for Sesilou to finish walking, as you said, and was able to get to the end of the demo without any more game-stopping events (apart from dying, I suppose!).

I didn't play your original demo, so I don't know how the new one compares. I'd be reluctant to give it an exhaustive review like I would write for the main site, as it would be unfair to judge your demo by the same standards by which I would assess a polished game/final product. I'm sure you know what you need to work on when you come to remaking the demo, though a couple of pointers:

- A lot of your maps are too big, and seem quite bare (in particular the one outside your home and the school 'kiosk' felt like wasted space). Make sure there is as little empty space on your maps as you can (it's definitely worth opening up other people's projects in the editor and seeing how they made their maps).
- The dialogue/punctuation etc needs work; I'd be happy to help you with this.
- At the moment it seems like you're making the story up as you go along (probably because you are!). When you come to remaking the demo, have a story plan/know where you are headed. There are some quirky plot elements that I rather liked; try and find some way of working them into a coherent storyline.
- The battles are a little imbalanced, still. This is something I struggle with myself...I was never good with numbers Frown.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
- After I killed the teacher(!) and was told to go to the kiosk, I walked off the screen and came back on and the character 'reset' - just a case of debugging/making sure that you join all the dots, really.

Having said that, it was a lot of fun and it made me laugh (obviously appeals to my lowbrow sense of humour!). It's a damned sight better than my first "demo" (which I unearthed again yesterday and shuddered through once more), and you should certainly keep at it, though as I say you should plan out your story as you go ahead, and think of more events that could happen. At the moment the story progresses at a breakneck pace; I'm sure you can expand more on what happens.

As for putting it on the main site, what files are you trying to upload, and what file extension are you trying to upload? If you wish to upload it, I would fix the walking bug - it might confuse people otherwise.

Well that would be understandable, most of my class failed getting out from that accursed island-town
so yeah, I guess it adds spice....

I believe it's because those were the maps from demo 1. and I'm very sorry, well I got too compromised, and released it with some of the original crappy maps. next one will have more decent mapping.

I'll give you that one. my grammar is a bit sucky nowadays...

Actually, I believe I DID make the whole plot before even making the demo (you can read it somewhere on the forums)
I kinda think it's natural that the story went real fast at first, considering you control a hyped up teen with no spuervision whatsoever... but then (also as a part of the plot) Sesilou meets Hunk. a more experienced gunner and that kinda forces the plot to slow down.

Yes it's unusual to see a lv10 player with more than 1K of HP... so I was kinda going for this idea. let's say you end part1 as a lv70 character, you'd start back at say, lv.5 same for part3. kinda gives it a kingdom hearts aspect.

Well thanks for the support! I really appreciate all of this, yeah sure it doesn't look as much right now, but once I get the whole thing altogheter I believe it will make a nice addition to the palace/town.

as for uploading the demo, I uploaded 2 folders on the demo on this topic, (the game & installer)
I only want to upload the game, seeing how it has all the resources (and unused stuff in there)
but everytime I tried to upload this, I get the "internet explorer cannot display the website" page and when I go back the stuff I writed on the review was gone, and yes I atempted this many times with the same result.
(oddly enough my internet connection is fine) so could you upload the demo? thanks before hand.

hopefull my school won't be a hazzard anymore to this project.

(btw... does the demo cover enough material to make a review?... I'm just a bit curious.)

My game freezes after the gaurd yells at me at cornia city for sneaking in to see the rock of fate. Is this the end of the demo or a minor bug that has to be ironed out? Otherwise, I can't really complain about anything not metioned here, and the story does need to be explained a little more throughtly, but more or less I could follow everything going on.

I tried making a new game and then it glitched out after you start auto-walking out of the park when it rains, and then you reach the road and it doesn't stop, he just walks straight over and it trigger the text event "I see construcion vechicles... (ect.)" and then it doesn't let me control the chara... Frown

Ohh ok I see, lol.

And, yes, you really should. I'm gonna post a note to self that says "Never use walking and talking at the same time in RM. It doesn't end well."

I think if implemented correctly it can be a rather effective way of furthering the story, especially if you've a monologue coming up. The most tedious thing is having to scroll through reams of text - if you can keep your characters moving, or provide some sort of active visual accompaniment to your text in these cutscenes, for obvious reasons it makes the scene feel much less static. I didn't open up the ADIOL files to see what the problem was, though I suspect it was something to do specifically with the teleport between two different maps, and the event created to 'turn off' the cutscene not being existent in the second map.

There's enough playtime, certainly, and it's very promising, but I do think it lacks the polish of the games I've reviewed for the website in the past, and I don't think it would be fair to judge your project as it is at the moment. I'll be sure to put my reviewing hat on for the next installment, though - I'd keep going with it, and tidy up some of the things I mentioned in my earlier post. Also, do have a look at other games, e.g. look at how in Snake's Experiencia project, there is no 'dead' space, and how much care has been taken over producing them. I had a read of your project thread, too, and I think that same dizzying pace of storytelling evident in your demo is also in that thread. (I didn't realise there was anything to do with radioactive exposure until I read your plot summary!) I think you can afford to slow down things a little.

unless I promplty halted any sort of movement before changing maps.... oh well
isn't there a way to make some text un-skipable?

Hey Rav, sorry I haven't give a lot of input in a while. I try to answer as many Game Making Support questions as I can in the morning before work. At night I'm usually tied up doing something else. Frown

When is your demo going to be released?

it's ok I can't really blame you cuz' my hands are tied down as well mostly with school
homework and stuffs...

well one should arrive either this or the next week.

also I added these 2 updates.

1. the dev room can now only be accessed if the player succesfully found a VIP pass while playing.

2. I have included the very first sidequest on the game. also a beta of the sidequest system.
the player gets rewarded with a card proving he passed that mission collecting these might
unlock something later on.... I dunno what still, after all it's a WIP.

demo coming REAL soon.
