Adventures in Idiocy: A Demo(Not much of one, mind you.)

Right-o, here it is.  This is...well...I guess it isn't even a demo really.  It's more just to let people critique what I've done so far and perhaps provide help where improvement is needed.  Wait, is that a demo?  ARGH!  I'm so bamboozled!

*ahem*  Let's move on, shall we?

THE STORY: The story is one which I have discussed before, though it make no appearance whatsoever in the package here.  Still, a basic is summary is that two friends, Robert and Timothy, are moving in to a place of their own.  One day, after searching for Tim in the woods, they return home to find that the country they live in, and thus their home, has been annexed by the neighboring Un-named Empire.  Naturally, our heroes are furious.  As we all know, Empires are evil, even if their not!  They set out on a journey to bring down the Empire.  A journey that will cross dimensions, shatter nations, and involve copious amounts of dick jokes.  Also, swearing.  Oh, and there's something about demons and controlling the forces of nature to bear down upon one's enemies.  More importantly, though, DICK JOKES!

Gameplay: Ah, here it is.  I'm hoping to put in enough variation to be interesting, but not so much that it becomes muddled.  Here's what I've got at the moment.

-The battle system being used is Blizzard's ABS, or Action Battle System.  Think Zelda or, what is it, Secret of Mana(I think that's the one.).

-I'm working on a cooking system that will allow you to hunt and gather ingredients to concoct your own, more powerful, healing and restorative items.

-Hunting and gathering!  As you travel, you will find herbs and small animals running around.  Simply walk up to them and hit the Action Button to gather.  You might not always get something, but that's how life goes.  Suck it up.

-Magic that upgrades as you use it.  So far, this has only been implemented in the form of the Fire Spell, which upgrades to Fire Lv. 2 after five uses.  You have two other spells, but they won't upgrade yet.  Sorry 'bout that.

FEATURES:

-I use Inq's sprite set which, no matter your opinion of the man, you have to admit is wonderful.  I'm not much of a mapper, so anyone that can offer suggestions on how to improve it will be invaluable.  I even made a custom sprite for my character!  YAY ME!

-There's a few enemies scattered about on the first map to play around with the battle system.  There's no animations for the weapon strikes yet, so they'll hit, but you won't see the swing.

-If you enter the house and check the chest therein, you'll find an infinite supply of the ingredients for the first cooking recipe.  Inspect the book on the counter to cook up as many healing items as you want!

ISSUES:

-The big one is this: when you upgrade Fire to the next level, you're left with Fire Lv. 1 being set to your hot-key, even though the spell is deleted.  This means you can hit the button all day, but it won't work.  You have to go back to the menu and switch in the new spell.  I'd like that it happened automatically, but lack the knowledge to figure out how.  Any help with that would be great.

Other than that, just let me know anything you think needs work.  Don't be shy about it, just don't be rude either!

And here's the control schemata for those unfamiliar with the Blizz-ABS system:

OH!  And there is more than one map.  The path to the left leads into the woods, for which I have a few maps.  Just follow the path the the screen edges to move on.  And no, not all of them lead to maps yet.

There are four truths in life that all must come to terms with:
1. I will die and all that I am will cease to be.
2. I am born alone and will die alone. I can never truly know another.
3. The suffering in my life is my own creation. I create my reality through my choices.
4. ALL meaning is arbitrary and relative. Life is ultimately meaningless.

I believe that the Joy2Key program would definitely be beneficial to the button layout, on a 360 controller or some such thing where there would be as many buttons to map as what is shown there. I shall download this sometime soon and give it a try.

Don't tease the octopus kids!

So far, you got a pretty nice setup. Now you just need a story, or something to do...

Everything is working finely I think...(Not used to blizz abs controls. I probably don't know if everything works fine, but I'm pretty sure I got a good number of things down. It certainly helps you put an image of the controls on this page.)

It's pretty funny to know you kill a rabbit or squirrel hunting and just end up leaving it there because its meat is too scrawny. XD

And darn those bees.  Pirate

Well, I've gotten a ton of work done on it since I posted this.  I've added transitory screens between each section of the woods, a house in the south-west, and an easter egg that's not all that hard to find.  The next time I release it, I'll actually have some story implemented.  The big stumbling block at the moment is setting up an actual animation for the attacks.  I'm not quite sure how to do it with Blizz's ABS.  I suppose it's time to hit up Google.
